All of my data usage shows "wap.cingular" on my bill and yes I have been tethering. Most of my tethering usage is on a "need to have" basis. I've done most of my tethering in the month on June. Mostly wanted to play with it. No excessive charges on my bill, ever. Use common sense and you'll be fine. It should NOT be your primary internet access at home. :)

Im almost at the 5 gig mark for the month on my iPhone, but I didnt even tether this month

a lot of it is from streaming music from a 3G station and I think my 6 IM accounts being pushed

so is the 5 Gig soft cap a myth or not?

I agree.
Dont depend on it as your major internet provider at home or on the go. Mostly for emergency or need to have basis.
This way you wont have any overages or problems.

5gb is a myth
people seriously need to stop spreading it around.

If they catch you they make you work in their silicone mines, and after that they promote you to being a CSR. ;-)

Haha

Ethnic child A: "If you don't sing, they make you star in a Christmas movie with Tim Allen!"

Stewie: "It's a tiny, tiny world!"

I'd be really really surprised if your IM's being pushed accounted for more than a couple of megs.

AT&T could theoretically see when you are tethering by looking at the TTL of each data packet being sent, if they see a TTL one less than what it normally is, it is an indication that your phone is routing packets, therefore you are tethering.

Then you just need to adjust the default TTL field on your tethered device to be 1 higher than the default TTL on the iPhone. Or maybe make it 2 higher so it looks like the vast majority of iPhone users are tethering, and you are the only honest user :)

I've also read that another sign is the port numbers used. Especially with NAT in front of larger nets, the port numbers used have a different pattern.
