I can see it happening. iPad seems to used more and more in a horizontal position. Apple’s own accessories such as the Magic Keyboard are pushing this. All the iPads I‘ve ever owned are used horizontal 90% of the time, especially when using conferencing apps. Makes perfect sense to me.

This. Apple wants us to treat it like a more futuristic laptop. They should design it like one. If you think about the current placement of the camera, it is engineered for the device, not the human. (Front and rear cameras together) That is a big Apple screw-up.

I think I’m way over 90% horizontal.

Why did Apple do away with it then?

As to more content, that completely depends on what that content is. Editing photos in Lightroom for instance is much better landscape.
Don't ask me why Apple did away with it. Sometimes, they make dumb decision. ?‍♂️
And if you edit a portrait photo in Lightroom, then landscape is not mich better.
