Coconut battery. It jumps around apwhen I check it each time.
Ok, I use Battery Health 3.

The battery is 4,6 years old with 1027 cycles on it.

On cycle 854 is was down to 79% capacity.

Then it started to get better and capacity gradually increased up to 89% at best.

Now it's down to 79% again.

Here is what they both show, see attached. Also, I started using twice with full battery, switched user accounts and it just turned off. Seems that when it does anything intensive, such as booting or logging an a account, it just shuts down. Logging shows shut down as Loss of Power issue. I also added the shutdown logs. The 0 indicates power failure, the 5 indicates normal shutdown.

So, I went to the apple store today and they ran a diagnostic that shows the battery is needing to be replaced. I was unfortunately past the 4 years to get the free Top Case. He did say the $199 replacement does include a top case, so that is good to know. That being said, I will decide if I use it as is, as it still works well, replace the battery myself, or just sell\trade it in. Thanks for all the help.

Sorry to hear that.

It seems that your battery have not been exercised enough. My battery is older and have over 1000 cycles but is in better condition.

Looking at OWC selling a Newertech battery for 89 but vendors on e-bay claim to have Apple Geniune OEM batteries... Not sure if that's the case. I don't really mind replacing, but I ordered another machine as well, so if the new one works better I might just dump this machine, who knows, or keep them both.

Well, Apple Silicon is always nice.

If you don't value the 2017 computer that highly, maybe aftermarket batteries work good enough.

So I just found something cool. Through e-bay you can buy a SquareTrade Warranty, for 1 year it's 41.99, and it says it covers non-serviceable batteries, which is what this machine has. It says you have to wait 30 days, ship the item in and they fix within 5 days. I wonder if they would allow the apple store to fix it (preferred) and just reimburse! Seems like a really good option here. You do have to wait 30 days after purchase to submit a claim.

OP:
If you're going to replace the battery, the best deal is to pay the $199 and have Apple do it.

This is particularly good because you get the new top case as part of the repair.

That means that you get a brand-new butterfly keyboard, which (as pointed out earlier) is the "central point of failure" in these laptops.
(go back and re-read reply 8 that I posted to you)

That $199 from the Apple Store sounds like a bargain to me.

Yah, i'm considering it. During all this I found another deal on the same machine, so I'm waiting for it to arrive. I might keep the new one if it's better and just sell this one or trade in etc.. I also like fixing stuff and My keyboard is pretty solid. I found a source for Apple OEM batteries. 199 is a good deal for what you get, but in reality, it seems like a scam still to me that you can't just replace the battery, makes no sense why they couldn't engineer a simple slot with a screw to hold down a battery to make it a simple removal. Seems that it's designed this way purposely to make money, force people to trade in. For example, this machine's trade in value is $305, but the battery replacement is 199? Some people will say, ok, new MacBook air, $999, why throw 199, when I can get a MacBook air brand new for 695 now. And I'm sure MANY people just do the trade in.

Thought I got REALLY lucky, got my second machine for 200 on e-bay, booted to diagnostic, then restarted and it booted to Catalina. I Formated drive, re-installed Catalina then started to upgrade to 12.3 Monterey, and it died. SSD won't detect. So I swapped SSD's and sure enough the new one I got has a bad SSD, but a Really good battery! So my original with bad battery is up for a decision, buy SSD and Battery, or dump it. I can buy another 128gb SSD from E-bay for like 32 bucks and try the battery replacement and I've got 2 pretty nice machines for average cost like 250-260 each. The nice thing with the second one I got, it has original box and charger and papers and such but only 8GB ram, where the bad battery unit has 16gb RAM.

Anyhow, this has been a fun adventure :).

So this is bazaar, I thought to give this drive one more chance, before replacing. I never did a SMC reset. So I did the reset, and NVRAM reset, restarted, and it went right back to finishing the Monterey install! I' m on the machine now using it and it's working perfect. I don't get it. I did a First aid and said no errors. I'm a bit afraid to turn it off!

It sure feels good when you solve those kind of problems, don't it? ?

By the way, my battery is at 1032 cycles now, and capacity have jumped up to 85%, it just refuses to die. ?

Well, didn't last, as I thought, this morning, machine was very hot, and got the File Folder with "?" mark. SSD must be shot. Ordering a new one today. Was worth a shot!
