Is Apple going to cover this cost?

Yes I am still covered by the one year tech warranty. So by the time they are through with it, it will be a new computer anyway still with 1.83 cd probably. It depends what they have in stock I guess because they may not have the 1.83 spare parts lying around which would mean like 2.0 or 2.16 CD I guess.

I agree now, I'm glad I will have a whole new comp :)

This is great, though to be honest I would be a little cautious as you still won't have AppleCare. It may not be a bad idea to sell it on eBay when you get it back repaired, then take the money and buy a refurb MacBook, AppleCare, and an external monitor. Just a thought.

One more thought: It looks like they're going to be replacing a lot. I'd get an estimate from the service center on what this would cost if there was no warranty. If the sum is greater than $2,000 then you may be able to convince Apple that it would save them money to send you a new entry level MBP.

True that, I'll ask how much it costs Apple for the parts to do this.
