Software or Hardware

I can remember some time ago Mr. Jobs stating the Apple was in the business of selling hardware not software, but then maybe not. Also have been testing Windows 7(Vista update) and it will not as usual be worth buying

window7

read 2nd last paragraph. who needs that and pay big bucks for the privilege. and as usual wait for sp1 to correct all the bugs

It's only a beta version still. But my point is that most reviewers have had quite positive reactions to Windows 7, in marked contrast to their reaction to Vista. When it is finally released it will be a much stronger competitor to OS X.

Windows 7 VS OS X

Reminds me of an old joke; What do Microsoft and Air Conditioners have in common? The minute you open windows, they both cease to function properly :)

bought a mini a few days ago. Not too happy about the possibility of paying full cost for the OS. We'll see though.

I bought a new iMac two weeks ago. Reading this thread I was wondering: what does the upgrade strategy of Apple look like normally? Can you, for instance, skip Snow Leopard and upgrade the next time, jumping one version? Or are you forced to upgrade each time?

You don't ever have to upgrade. You can buy any later version (as long as it supports your hardware) skipping any number of versions you like.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a bag of satsumas, but I hear that the fruit shop will stop selling satsumas soon in order to concentrate on mandarins.

I really want a citrus burst now so I might just go for those satsumas. Thing is, once I get my satsumas home, can I take them back to the shop and get mandarins for free?

If not, thats hardly fair - or indicative of how business works here on mars...

You are spending ~$1500 for a computer and then you are too stingy to buy an OS for ~$130?

I never understood why spending a certain amount on the machine means that any costs in the $100 to $200 range are considered inconsequential - sometimes people save for a year or more to buy their beloved mac -

You're not happy about buying a full update that doesn't have a release date and isn't likely to be out for four months?

There really is no need to upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I was running Panther, it stayed on those Macs, and they are still running just fine. I did not ever use Tiger. My newest Mac has Leopard, but it will never see Snow Leopard.

Upgrading the OS is a personal preference.

SL will be much more significant than any other update in the past, except maybe 10.0 to 10.1.

... what?!?! it's not even a major version number.. and I _still_ have to pay?! Of all the things I loooooove about Mac.. I think I just found one I dislike... pffft.

It's like saying... I've just purchased Vista, surely Microsoft will give me Windows 7 for free when it's released. Absurd isn't it. ;)

I've installed Windows 7 RC in boot camp on my work iMac 20" (2009) and I don't see much of an improvement. If anything I have less software that works correctly with Windows 7 RC, odd performance (quite smooth and fast one minute, chokes the next) and RC is not Beta - it's a Release Candidate.

I have noticed a couple of problems with the RC 7100 that beta build 7000 didn't have (BSOD in VMware Fusion when booting, big problem.), but it is a big performance and stability increase over Vista for everybody I've talked to. Well I never had a BSOD on Vista, so Windows 7 is less stable for me, but I guess I'm the exception.
