My 5 was easy to hold mainly because of its smaller size.. even with square sides and matte finish it was easy to hold due to size. 11 pro has glossy rounded sides with matte back correct? The gloss edges and back on the X are what do it for me. So much grip for someone who doesn’t use a case.
The 5 series was easy to hold because the edges were chamfered.

(As well as being light, yes)

X series pros were easy to hold because stainless steel isn’t slippery with natural hand oils. And they fit the curves of hands so comfortable.

I agree X series were amazing

Upgraded from the 11pro to the 14pro this week and I much prefer how the 11pro felt in my hand. The flat edges are horrible to hold. I did get a leather case which makes it better but the size is much more substantial then a naked 11pro now. Apple to do tend to change the design form every 3ish years so will be interesting to see the form of the 15…
Noooooo! I just got a 14 pro in the mail! 🤣

Just bought two brand-new, sealed iPhone 11 Pro's (I absolutely hate the 12, 13, 14 design, 0 innovation for the 12 prompted the design change since just adding 5G would not have convinced as many ppl).

I did the same but used two months ago. I just wish the cameras were on par with the newer phones (13mini and up)

It’s interesting because when the round edges were introduced, everyone wanted the squared edges. Now that we are back with the squared edges, people prefer the rounded edges.
It may seem that way, but the unhappy ones are the loudest – as well as the ones you remember more.

People are, generally, more likely to go out of their way to comment online when they’re unhappy with something.

So it’s not that people flip, it’s more likely that you’re hearing from different ‘groups’.

The chamfered edge was nice on the 5. I didn’t like it so much initially going from 4, but with a 13P now, it’d be a nice compromise.

To be honest though, I don’t see myself upgrading on the 2 year cycle like back in those days, so by the time I’ll be replacing this 13P the iPhone might not even have edges.

I completely agree

I definitely prefer the design of the XS and iPhone 11 over the 12, 13 and 14

I really hope that Apple does consider going back to the previous design in the future or at least make that an option for users that prefer it over the flat edge design

As for now, the only iPhone that Apple continues to make with the curved edges is the SE - so hopefully they don’t change the SE design to flat edges to give users an option between the two

I went from the rounded edged iPhone X to the flat edged 12 Pro and at the time tech channels endorsed the then called “industrial look” and “iPad like edges” of the iPhone 12 line. Also at least one channel (MKBHD) believed that the flat edges resulted in a firmer grip.
Personally I miss the rounded edges!

As I sit here getting two iPhone XS’s ready to sell on eBay I can’t help but notice how much more comfortable the XS is in the hand than my 14pro.. I use my phones naked and the X/XS is the absolute best feeling phone without a case. The rounded edges and gloss back are so grippy and comfortable in the hand. Here’s to hoping apple goes back that direction in the future..any other naked users agree?

I found it hilarious when the sheep (aka Apple fans) bleated ecstatically when Apple brought back square edges, albeit this time with much larger, fatter, heavier phones that made those sharp edges particularly annoying and fatiguing.

With the iPhone 6, Apple touted "light" and "comfortable." We haven't heard those words from any Apple propagandists recently, have we?

Reviewers loved comfortable phones, too: "The iPhone 6 is a much more comfortable device to hold vs. the iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and 5s, all of which preferred straight edges and right angles to the 6’s sloping curves."

I sincerely hope not. The smooth edges are harder to grip and they were really a lie to make the phone feel slim when it really wasn't. I prefer the metal, non glass cases, and as flat as they can go.

I don't think so. Chassis with round edges are 'wasted space' re packing in interior components more efficiently and are harder to machine (so I've read!).

Since Jony Ive departed, it seems as if operations and hardware engineering are in the ascendent. So we've seen harder edges in all of Apple's new hardware - for example, the AWU is obviously the way that the regular watches will soon look.

So no. The MBP, the MBA and the AWU are the shape of things to come (pun intended).

I personally like this much more utilitarian almost military look. It is - as designers and architects say - more 'honest'.

I suspect that the vast majority of iPhone owners immediately slap a case on it, so the design is mostly marketing and the ergonomics don't matter so much. If they did, we wouldn't have ginormous phones either!

I suspect that a significant proportion of people in this forum don't put a case on their iPhones.

But it's probably the case that most 'regular' case slapping people don't spend their times on forums talking about Apple either. 😁

I think climate has a lot to do with it. In Atlanta the winter air is bone-dry which makes glass slippery. Complete opposite in summer humidity when it becomes sticky.

Since iPhones are, ”designed in California”, I wonder if that explains why Apple like glass so much? The temperate costal environment keeps it grippy year-round? Just a thought.

Interesting, makes sense.

I’m in Texas and it’s about 50% humidity (I.e. more than west, less than east). I find the stainless steel very grippy in the AC and outside in the heat. Humidity could have something to do with it (AC doesn’t completely remove humidity according to my Nest).

The aluminum of the 11 had me dropping my phone on my face/chest all the time while lying down in bed reading the phone; yet the 11 pro I never had that issue in the ~2 months I was using it in various conditions ranging from outside in Maine, indoors in AC, in bed, easy hikes, work, etc.

I sure hope not.

The rounded edges never "bit" well into my hand so they felt more like bars of soap and the rounded edges also gives the visual perception of much thicker bezels.

I sure hope not.. I much prefer the flat screen and edges both aesthetically and for comfort.

No, the next step is concave sides that bite into your hand for a secure grip!

Since it’s concave - buttons won’t work so you will have capacitive areas to touch instead. No USB C as it will be all magsafe!

If you get the plain stainless steel and hold it far enough from you - you will get this “fun house” reflection effect that is good for another 100 dollar premium…

I love that everyone who doesn't agree with you is automatically a sheep or a "fan"..... I loved the iphone 4, 4S, 5 design.. I happen to think the display looks much better and pops more on a flat screen and quite frankly it's more comfortable to hold in my opinion, I don't know if its because I have bigger hands.... When apple brought back the flat design I was ecstatic. And i am the farthest from a "sheep" or "fanboy" Unless a company was giving me something for free I am not going to argue for them or be loyal to them like some people tend to be. It just comes down to personal preference really... some will agree with you and some will not... those that do not are not necessarily a sheep, they just happen to have a different preference than you do.

Some people prefer round edges, some prefer square edges. It’s not so much that people have changed their preferences, but that the products have changed, and hence who is complaining about what changes.

I personally have no preference for holding a rounded or squared phone, as long as I never have to type on a Galaxy S8 again.

I've thought for a while Apple will just swap back and forth every few years to whatever people are nostalgic for.
