Microsoft isn't even rumored to be building the courier, Ballmer said he hadn't even seen the video. Its just normal concept video that for some reason everyone thinks (i guess wishes) was real.

Mark my words, if they DID ever manage to release it, and it actually lived up to the video (when was the last time MS delivered what their concept videos showed?) I would buy it in a heartbeat, its exactly the companion device ive been envisioning for years.

It won't at all
The courier is for business people not something you would really use in a household
And yeah the iPad is a big iPod Touch but is easy to use where as the courier looks complicated and like it can't be used that much in a household.

Not sure. If the courier comes as advertised everyone from flylady (organized moms), to graphic arts, students and business, especially with exchange as well as movie buffs will pick one up seeing his they can watch free tv and not have to buy it from iTunes.

Edit: Has anyone looked around? The ipad I'd getting negative feedback everywhere and I don't want to start a flame war, but Jobs calls this innovative? Being locked out with codecs, no multitasking, no stylus, no voice to text? Like others have mentioned. If your job was to build a 10 inch iPod, that would be easy to do if you had the OS from Apple, how is it innovative.

The courier as being developed now is likely 2.5x as big as the ipad, runs some kind of badly implemented version of windows that doesn't work right in that environment and costs at least twice as much for the base model.

Undoubtedly that will be scrapped as they try to come up with their own iPad killer, which still will miss the mark, along with those by many other companies.

What nobody saw coming, was that apple was using the iphone as a springboard to this kind of device. Literally caught everyone flat footed. Just when they all were trying to catch up to the iPhone, blam Apple hit them again. They are all dazed and confused now.

I do think Bill Gates is enjoying his retirement for the most part. I appreciate him speaking out against the Copenhagen conference wanting to waste valuable resources jousting at mythical global warming issues instead of giving it to people who are in need in 2010. Go Bill Go.

Well, I'm not sure about the killing part, but it will be competition.

Obviously people who like OS X and Apple's products in general will go with the iPad, or most of them will. And people who despise Apple will get the Microsoft Courier.

Personally, I prefer the iPad, as of right now. Mainly because I'm already familiar with the interface, I like it, it's fast and simple. The Courier actually doesn't look too bad either, it just looks like everything Microsoft makes. It would most likely take me 5 steps to do something simple.

Slates are really a new thing. And I don't think that Apple or Microsoft have the correct ingredients to make it perfect. Since both of them are 1st gen, I can't really expect too much from all of this.
However, I do like the iPad shape better. The whole book thing they have for the Courier just looks sorta confusing. Like why can't it just be one screen?

Anyway, that's just what I think. But I can't wait to see both of them and have a chance to play around with them. Even though I'm sure that eventually, Apple will win this fight, just because they have a really good reputation with mobile devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch. But this will be one of those things that every company will wanna jump into. Like Sony, Samsung, etc. But, those will most likely just be the cheap options, like they are now with phones and laptops.

Assuming the courier gets released it is clearly aimed at a different and more focused market. It is aimed at business and students. The iPad is aimed at everyone. The iPad is an extensible lifestyle device.

I keep hearing about this new-fangled Microsoft surface though. I hear thats pretty new and exciting..

Not to nit-pick, but the MS Surface was intoduced, albiet not released, before the the iPhone. I wouldn't call that new-fangled.

As for the Courier, we shall see. MS has got to decide to release it first.

Well, despite the missing features, the iPad is innovative. That's a lot of computer power in a device no thicker than some hunting catalogs.

Courier isLate

I think the by the time Courier is introduced, iPad will be a much improved platform ( and hardware accessories to boot). The concept video looks cool, but I am sure there will be applications similar to that on iPad platform as well.

I bet apple is going to port all iLife package to this new platform. I am very much impressed with iWork suite.

Courier looks great. If it can run Android and iPad can't, I might get one.

The more competition for the iPad, the better.

Well, now I know the iPad is going to be a huge success. Whenever people start talking about an "[Apple Product] Killer", said Apple product completely dominates its market segment for the next decade. ;)

Seriously, I'm not sure people who haven't been thinking through the interaction model for this device very carefully (and who haven't used one) really understand just how different the experience is likely to be vs. desktop computing... particularly for the unwashed masses who are perpetually a little uneasy with computers. This platform is deeper than it looks, and when people get their hands on it -- and really smart developers thing really hard about what they can do with it -- I think that's going to matter a lot more than the lack of a webcam or whatever.

Android is already in the nook

That explains the bugginess.

I have been living with an HTC Hero for the last few months. Thought I would try something other than the iPhone. I got it and thought, awesome! I can have widgets and stuff running at the same time. Then I started using the phone...

Be careful what you wish for...

The unfortunate reality when it comes to these mobile devices is spec sheets mean nothing.

All the attacks on Apple are always seemingly based on spec sheets though. Yet as with other products, the usability is all that matters, and given the foundation for the iPad it seems unlikely that it will not be successful.

Actually what a lot of people fail to realize is how well win 7 runs, plus MS no longer has to support 25 different oses, xp, 98, millenium, you catch my drift.

Two thing. I have a 3g iPhone my friend an iPhone 3gs and another, something I can't recall but the moment I launched the programs it was blazing copared to the iPhone.
Personally now that msft no longer has to babysit so many oses and certified hardware (look at the fiasco apple had with just exchange last year), if the courier comes as advertised , it's going to do very wel. But with the lockdown the ipad has, which is a shame ( rah rah rah underground ), I think google wil win if the cone out with a minipad. Lol

umm where were you last week, Monday and Tuesday. Everyone pleaded that Apple didn't release a giant iPod touch which is what they did.

The stock has tumbled big time.
$215 to $191 and if you google people upset with ipad there are hundereds of sites that are reporting this as a failure. And please dint use the iPhone analogy. Google has a great browser and once browsers are all touch with codecs and flash, the iPhone isn't going to look that appealing.
