I then chose to restore from back-up. I was presented with this image - but I could not change the source of the backup i.e. Restore From was 'fixed' in the position shown.

You're probably beyond this problem in post #5 now, but the solution is to press the back button and choose another disk. The snapshot list is for the disk you chose in the previous screen.

It was this (as shown) or nothing.

In essence, EVERYTHING is now different to what it used to be!!!

As others have said, it seems like Time Machine doesn't back up the system (OS) anymore like it used to. Only your data.

I read your comments from the other blog website. I'm still confused about what your end goal is here. Can you explain what outcome you're trying to reach, exactly?

The link you posted is the first mention I've seen of the whole restoration process changing. I read quite widely and have never come across the change anywhere else (not that had registered anyway).

I'm aware that there are many scams on the Internet. I've been trying to make sure that I haven't got caught up in one, so I asked here to see what responses I would get. I'm now quite relieved to know that other folk, including you, Izzy, were unaware that the whole methodology of recovery has changed! 😅

May I ask why you were so interested in the topic?

If true, it seems quite unfortunate. I used to think of TM as my backup + portable installation drive. Now, seems like you'd have to wipe + reinstall from internet recovery/separate USB drive + restore data.

As to your question, I like being up to date on Mac stuff and I enjoy helping people solve their technology problems, so I was just curious as to what you were trying to do in case there was some way I could help! And your thread promoted me to look more into how TM works now. I'm still using it now, but it's making me reconsider whether I should or not.

The non-boot ability issue with Time Machine has been known about for some time.

Further information via this link.
Did you, as a 'Newbie', know about it? 🤔

Perhaps you know about this, too? https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204157

(If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine)

I recognise your dilemma, Izzy - I feel much the same way.

Do you help folk on the Apple Support Communities (ASC) forums?

I don't spend as much time there, I feel like it tends to be more hit or miss with that site.

Back to the original topic: have you started looking for any replacement backup options? I haven't yet but probably will. Although I'm now wondering if full system OS restores are somehow not possible with the more locked down Apple Silicon systems?

People speak highly of Carbon Copy Cloner. I use it myself in addition to Time Machine.

SuperDuper is pretty good too.

No. I will continue to take back-ups with Time Machine.
