So that means I can rip out my 2nd nVidia 7800GTX256mb card and stick that into my Mac Pro when it arrives? Yeah, its not nearly the card the top end ATI is, but it has got to be better than the 7300gt from apple though...

It means you might be able to do it, nothing is definate until someone actually does it.

But as far as I can tell they're just the stock Intel or ATI drivers. Somebody, as an experiment, should try not installing the bootcamp drivers and instead installing straight ATI drivers off their website on a MBP or iMac and see if it recognizes the X1600. If so, that would be telling.
I tried and it wont let you there is some sort of special apple drivers...

Didn't know you were talking about boot camp... You don't need special apple drivers per se, you just need drivers that contain the correct device ID string for apple graphics cards which the Omega drivers support. However they have a program to make laptop chipsets work with all radeon drivers so i'm sure they'll fix this mac X1600 problem.

(original wrong message :( )
Tried what? What card? Did the apple logo come up on boot? Could you see the loading circle thing? Where did it stop booting? The Mac should be able to boot to a default driver.

so to be clear, you put a pc X1600 in the Mac Pro and it didn't work? I have this card and was about to try it but didn't want to damage the units.

you won't damage it, it's completely electronically compatible.

It won't damage it in any way. I sure that the card will work fine inside of bootcamp running Win XP.

I'm far from an expert in this area but a couple points...

- As others have pointed out, the PC video cards may work with Boot Camp on the Mac Pros, but getting them to work with the Mac side is as yet an unexplored issue, and getting them to work with both OSs may be a further challenge, though reverse-enginerring the other Intel Mac video cards' ROM may help.

- I'm pretty sure that all the PCI-E Mac-compatible video cards in the PCI-E G5 towers used a ROM file that was larger than 64k, and that most if not all PC cards use a ROM chip that is 64k. Thus, in order to flash, say, a 7800 series card you must buy a pin-compatible 128k ROM chip, de-solder the old chip and install the new one. Then flash. This may or may not be true with the new cards - if the new Mac cards have a 64k ROM or smaller then EEPROM swaps will no longer be necessary.

- Since the Mac Pro uses EFI I have no idea what we're dealing with now, but it's largely academic at the moment since I don't know of anyone that has uploaded their Mac Pro video card's ROM image.

- The Strangedogs video card flashing forum will probably be the first place to discover whether PC video cards can be flashed to the new Mac Pro. Keep an eye out there for updates.

Basically though it will probably be months before the ins-and-outs of the new hardware are known...the hackers will need to get their hands on the new hardware first. Of course, if you have a Mac Pro and don't mind being a guinea pig you can really help speed the process.

I'm really hoping someone can figure this out... I was totally pumped up at getting a new mac pro, but due to limited $$ I had to order the 7300 video card in it...

My PC now has 4 SATA-2 250gb Seagate drives in it, and Dual 7800GTX256 cards.... I was really hoping to pull 2 drives out of it and dump into the mac, and then put one of the vid cards in it to make the system just a 'bit' better for gaming...

although, in all honestly I really play WoW 90% of my time.......

I've been following that thread too. It looks like PC video cards can work in the Mac Pro for windows only, and the OEM cards that come in the Mca Pro are fully dual platform compatible. As I said in the other thread, this may mean it will be possible to flash PC X1900, 7300 and 7800/7900/Quadro series cards so that they work with both OSX and XP.

Well, I expect you to keep up with both threads. :p Interesting times we see.

OK, hopefully no one laughs me off the forum for this stupid question...

My monitor (Acer 20" LCD widescreen) has two connectors... DVI and SVGA.

If.. I put the DVI connector to the factory 7300 vidcard to the monitor...
Then, install the 7800GTX and use theSVGA cable to connect to the monitor...

If I boot OSX on the7300, the monitor will work..
if I boot WINXP on the 7800GTX, the monitor will work..

Or, will that cause problems with two different video cards plugged into the same monitor (but on different ports.....)

This seems like a nice way to avoid having to plug/unplug cables?

(sorry to sound ignorant on things.. its been a LONG time since I played with a Mac.. 1984 I bought the first Mac, then went PC... now with the new Mac Pro, I think its time to go back to quality computers :) )

I know that on Dell LCD's with DVI/VGA inputs you can pick between the analog and digital interfaces. On some monitors though DVI has higher priority over the analog input.
