Want to test multitouch? Go into a message application and hold down a letter, then press another letter and it will type both.

Multitouch is a problem on other smartphones because Apple has it patented. If you have your finger anywhere touching any part of the screen and you dont know it and you try to type something, it wont register because you already are "touching" the screen.

LOL, that's awesome!

Sidenote: Isn't it annoying when you're trying to take a screenshot and it tries to enable Backgrounding?! I wish there was a way to extend the time you need to hold Home in order for it to enable

You know you don't have to hold the lock and home button until the screen flashes? Just press them and let go immediately.

Ummmmm, yeah..... I simply swipe my finger accross the top of my screen to open up SB settings where I can:
turn on and off 3g
turn on and off Bluetooth
adjust brightness
turn on and off wifi
power down

There are many other things I can do that I don't feel the need to post here. So no need to make the touch screen multi touch, just JB and you can have your cake and eat it too.

for all the whiners, here is your answer

But if the phone was multi-touch rather than just 'dual-touch', there could be the option to, say, slide three fingers up and down the screen the adjust the brightness. Double-tap with three fingers to turn wifi on and off etc. etc.

screen already is multi touch....

I'm confused, I thought there was multitouch.

Is it? I can't think of any times it recognises more than two fingers. (unlike my MBP that has three and four finger swipe etc.)

Um are you serious? Lets go back to some basics here... Do you know what a multiple is? Last time I checked, anything above 1 point of input is multi-touch! The iPhone IS multi-touch. Have you lived under a rock for the last 3 years?

If you want 3 and 4 finger chords and gestures then that is your deal, but it does NOT make the iPhone any less multi-touch!

iPhone is multitouch. Multitouch is one of the iPhones MAIN selling points.

Here's the reason the system doesn't have what the original poster asked,

the system does not recognize gestures because this would interfere with programs that use the same combinations. For example, if you swipe up the screen with three fingers in iTeleport (formerly jaduu VNC) you will go into full screen mode, if you swipe down with three fingers you reclaim the task bar, if the system had a gesture as you suggest you'd be adjusting your brightness everytime you used this program.

In fact, most of the air mouse type programs that turn the iphone into a wireless mouse for a computer would have the iphone doing all sorts of crazy things when you really meant to be sending those gestures to the computer instead.

Oh and just for the record the capacitive screen of the iphone can detect a maximum of FIVE unique points at once. The Ipad can detect 12 unique points, I assume this is for your 10 fingers and two palms which makes sence if you wanted to use an onscreen keyboard.

running multiple apps would be much more useful. Adding new gestures would be an okay compromise but it doesn't seem that apple is willing to throw us a bone. I guess we'll just have to wait until THEY decide when they want to give us either.

Ok. Here are 3 examples of programs where I can touch the screen with 3 fingers and have all the points recognized at the same time.

The iPhone is multitouch. There you go, photo proof.

Now, I understand what you actually want. You're asking for system-wide OS gestures. That's a good idea. But you can't just say "multi touch" and expect everyone to know that you meant "gestures." I mean, I got what you meant, but I'm not surprised there was confusion here.

Whats the name of that first game with the "planets"? i totally forgot about it!
