im currently using iOS 12 on an iPad mini 4 with Safari open on the left and iMessage open on the right, all while watching a livestream from YouTube in PiP

Why can’t the iPhone XS Max do this when the crappy iPad mini can?

Apple hates us

Which app are you using to watch YouTube pip?

Not everyone’s eyes are equally built. In my experience, even with glasses, there is too much strain on the eyes when using a small screen for extended periods of time. I’ve noticed this on the first day, when I switched from 15 inch screen laptop to a laptop with a 13 inch screen. Maybe I should eat more carrots.

Everyone's eyes are different ;)

Its not that it can't be implemented but the screen ratio of the iPad makes it easy to use iPhone ratios for multitasking. This is why you can do 1/3 or 1/2 screen but not in between, or the 1/3 screen size overlay.

The iPhone is 16:9 or longer for the new models and the ratios are unknown to devs.

The reason a lot of apps won't multitask at all is because they chose not to code for it. Its a hassle and very few people use it. Its almost like the polish on an otherwise completed app.

Even in iOS on the iPhone a video app doesn't have to stop when you switch away from it, it can keep playing the sound and the video ticker going to start the video in sync when you switch back too it. VLC has a setting for it but you can watch movies and reply to a text without the movie pausing (play audio in background in settings). A lot of devs just choose not to do this because a lot of people watching something on their phone are actually watching something.

Picture in picture is device dependent and delegated by Apple. Some apps just can't/won't do it. If your app uses the built in AV player its relatively easy. However if you use your own player for various reasons it might not even be possible for your app to do PiP at all.

Another issue is the gestures required and their convoluted nature. I feel multitasking on the iPad feels unnatural. I'm stopping normal gestures half way I'm long pressing apps in a way that would normally cause them to be moved on the home screen. It feels like something I came up with at work on a friday night before a long weekend.....

Aside from that the phone is multitasking its just utilizing its screen space efficiently. Like with a laptop you don't have as many windows open on the same screen/plane as you do an ultra wide monitor.....typically.

Probably not, they didn’t invent that yet:rolleyes:
Hopefully comes with iOS 13 with the UI update (Dark mode).
