This isn't likely. I'm sure the high end bands will be exclusive to the high end watches. Apple doesn't want people buying the cheap sport and putting a high end band on it, and they certainly don't want to see mismatched watch/band combinations in public tarnishing their design "excellence".

I disagree. Wholeheartedly.
I believe that consumers will have the ability to buy any and all bands WITHOUT buying all 3 watches. In my opinion, that's like saying: "Apple would never let you buy an orange case & a blue iPhone 5C at the same time from the Apple store. Those colors don't go together!" Apple is NOT in the "making accessory choices for you" business. They are in the "sell you as much as they can business". I have little doubt that Apple would jump for joy if people started collecting all six bands... and wouldn't give a fig if they looked arbitrarily good to them or not! They'd be chuckling their way to the bank.

I think it's highly likely you will be able to buy bands independent of the watch. But if you look at Apple's website it's specifically laid out into 3 collections. And each collection shows the models in that collection. The sport collection shows ten models - all with fluoroelastomer bands. The darker aluminum is shown only with the black band. And the Watch collection only shows white and black fluoroelastomer bands, and only with the stainless steel, not the space black stainless steel. So clearly Apple has specific preferred combinations. I don't think there's any way for them to stop someone wearing a milanese loop with the aluminum watch but it seems to me it would look quite odd.

How do they prevent it though since it appears the band design is the same for every collection. The only way they could is to not sell bands separate from the watch. But that seems highly unlikely, especially since they show fluoroelastomer bands with the stainless steel model.

Apple will only sell the aWatch/band combinations shown on the sight (although there could be some minor changes before launch). Apple will not sell a Sport with a Milanese Loop in the same box (same SKU). You will have to buy a Sport with a band offered (fluoroelastomer) and then buy an optional Milanese Loop.

In all likelihood this is the way it will work.

Apple Watches/bands will be sold only in the combination shown on the aWatch site.

All bands will also be sold individually as an option to use on any aWatch you desire.

Or how about all watches are sold watch only, and you buy the band separately?

I mean, for the stainless steel watch, I believe there are at least three "good" band options -- steel link, leather loop, and classic buckle. You bundle one of these bands with the watch, it gets expensive if it comes with a band the user doesn't plan to use.

I doubt it. Apple wouldn't be showing off collections on their website if watch and bands were sold separately. Is there a "good" option that doesn't exist? Maybe paring one of the colored fluoroelastomer bands with the space gray aluminum. Or a black leather band for the Edition version. Other then that I can't think of any combinations Apple left out.

Yes this makes the most sense.

From Apple's website

Quote: "To help you choose the expression that suits you best, we’ve curated three collections of cases and bands that we feel work particularly well together."
There's the perfect proof. They have "curated" different styles that they think look good together. So, the only reasonsthey don't show the sport with other bands is because their collection doesn't include one with a leather or stainless steel band, and probably because you have to buy a sport with a sport band included; all others are probably separate.
