I've been reading around about the 3gs jb. Like I said in some of my earlier posts, i'm new to the 3gs, and i now finally have mine downgraded to 3.1.2 and jb, and all that jazz.... anyways... I was under the impression that a tethered jailbreak happens at first with all 3gs f/w upgrades, UNTIL they can pwn the iBoot. But today I have been reading around, and I'm starting to get the impression that if you have a new iBoot you will always have a tethered jb (well, for now at least). is that right?
My question (summed up) is... is the new iBoot ALWAYS a tethered jb, or does the iBoot get a new pwn everytime a new update comes out?
I hope my question makes sense.
Thanks.

Yes, if you have the new bootrom, you will have a tethered jailbreak until some exploit is found (if one is found).

Ever is a very long time. There is no way for us to know what some clever hacker may discover. All we can say is that there is currently no prospect for one, and that it is best not to make plans based on hopes.

Yeah I realize nobody knows if there will be an exploit for it.
All I wanted to know was if my phone will be tethered until that point.
So far a tethered jb isnt that bad... but it sure would be nice to be able to turn my phone off. :)
thanks for the responses.
Anyone have an old bootrom'd 3gs they'd be wanting to sell? ;) haha

Actually, we can be 100% certain that the phone will be tethered until the untethered jailbreak is available. How could it be untethered before then?

Unless.... They somehow found a way to downgrade the bootrom. Then you would, in theory, have an untethered JB before an exploit is found. :D

But now I'm just being difficult. ;)

*NOTE* I am in no way referring that this is even possible. Before someone starts asking how you downgrade your bootrom, it was only hypothetical.

True, but I dont think thats possible.

OK, now I can see a dozen new threads "How to downgrade 3GS baseband"

are the bootroms completely random in the 3gs or wuld if go by the week and year it was made? also is there another way to find it out other then putting the phone into DFU mode I just bought a week 37 build 3gs and would like untethered....although i never turn my phone off

Different factories switched during different weeks.

Just put you phone in DFU mode and check it. Only way to know for sure with week 37 phone.

Check bootrom, Mac or PC

I'm a little confused on this tethering stuff...
I have a jailbroken 3GS and I can turn it off or reboot it as much as I want without "tethering" it to my laptop.
Is mine magic?

tethered jailbreak and tethering are 2 different things.

Your 3GS obviously has the old bootrom, so the tethered jailbreak doesn't effect you.

Thanks!
I know what tethering is, but from what I read I thought a tethered jailbreak meant you had to tether to a laptop running the jailbreak software in order to reboot your phone.
Either way I'm glad I don't have to do that.
:)
