Even though the website states differently this USB 3.0 card works out of the box with my cMP 2,1 (OS X 10.11)

You need proper USB cables for it and sometimes power-hungry drives can cause problems.

It is always a good idea to power external mechanical drives with the AC > DC auxiliary power port on the dock or enclosure . With a SSD , you shouldn't have to worry about it .

Unfortunately not all spinners provide an additional power port. But yes, that usually works.

Thanks for the info about the memory upgrade. Do you know if they work without developing too much heat?
As far as I remember the original RAM modules came with heat sinks.

You are going to laugh your head off when you learn this , but the enterprise DDR2 FB modules with the flat heat spreaders actually perform better in our 2006-08 cMPs than those Super Duper Space Age Looking Apple Qualified modules with the big fat finned heat sinks . Guess what , it was all technician theater ! They didn't do squat . Sad thing is , though , DDR2 often crapped out because the design is just too hot . Keep some spares on hand and if your Mac has a problem , memory would be the first thing I'd suspect . DDR3 and DDR4 are quite cool , on the other hand .

I bought modules from Komputerbay with the apple-stlye heat sinks once and it was a super bad experience. Even though the Mac Pro recognized the RAM, the fans went bananas. SMC and NVRAM didn't help so I returned them.

Agree with what is said above. Mac Pros have a lot of DDR2 memory issues. One I used to have had to have its memory reseated constantly.

And no, those heat sinks are not necessary at all.

If you’re going for 32GB any matching set should work pretty well. The eBay deals from servers are cheap and reliable for me.

And here it is! Huge multi core jump and the performance is drastically different.
