I now know why the Apple TV II (which came out during "the year of HD") was still only 720p with an 8GB hard drive. Makes me agree with the person who has already said it above: why put out a $99 set top box that does what the alleged "new" Apple Television is supposedly going to do?

Apple is great at putting out just enough features to sell to the masses while holding out on just enough features to knock it out of the park on the next gen. Classic example: iPad.

iPad 1-revolutionary, decent enough internal chips for the early adopters, Great functionality for a product that had never existed, no camera.
iPad 2-evolutionary, better chips, better gyro/accel, crappy cameras
iPad 3-evolutionary, better chips, fantastic screen, upgraded HD cameras
iPad 4-revolutionary, will follow any new features from iPhone 5

I reckon the rumoured television set will be announced at WWDC alongside iOS6, and hopefully come out before christmas. I am in the market for a new TV at the moment (Have a crappy 10 year old 27" Bush TV, only supports 720P, terrible quality as well.)

Here is what I hope Apple release with the new set:

  • Obviously, an appstore. I hope that this will also mean that you'd be able to install functionality for things like Sky Plus if you have Sky, which would eliminate the need to connect an extra box to your TV.
  • Hopefully a high-res screen
  • Freeview Plus/Sky Plus type functionality, using iCloud that would allow you to record live broadcasts (maybe a 10GB limit for free, and you pay if you need more)
  • Hopefully Freeview HD functionality built in also
  • A subscription service from Apple, similar to netflix. I hope Apple do a better job with it though, as the selection for netflix over here in the UK is a bit rubbish, and a lot of the functionality is missing (IE the queue feature you get in the US.)
  • Built in webcam including FaceTime and iMessage
  • Siri Support (Why isn't this available on the new iPad?)
  • Decent amount of HDMI ports, hopefully at least 3.
  • I don't think 3D support will come as of yet, as (at least over here) not many people have 3DTV's and personally I don't think Apple will bother with it until glasses-free 3D is widely available.

Will update this post if I think of more

So why didn't we get Apps with the new Apple TV?!

Because Apple hasn't made an SDK for it yet. The best place to introduce a Software Developer Kit for AppleTV is at WWDC.

I believe that once they have a healthy selection of apps, they'll finally bring the AppleTV out of its hobby label and then release the full iTV.
