Are you serious? have you seen some of the upcoming apps being worked on? This is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Right now, the iPad is kinda like a larger iPhone or iPod touch. However, once developers start utilizing its full potential over the next year, I think we are going to start seeing apps we never dreamed of. Its only going to get better as it progresses.

...This got me thinking. I had to work quite hard to justify the 'use case' for this device to non-believers. The vast majority see this as no more than a big iPod touch....

It is a big iPod Touch. That's not a bad thing, and being a big iTouch allows it to do more things, but it is what it is.

Yes.
After the release of the new firmware that will allow more and more, there will be even greater interest. It's a niche product that could see casual use for years, BUT know that like the iPhone it just may become ubiquitous if apple does this right. They have a good track record, eh?

I was a BIG skeptic, now I see how this can change EVERYTHING.

I don't know, but I honestly don't think there is a mass market for this thing. All the people I have showed think it's just a big ipod touch..and I couldn't find out a way to show it's different. Just the pop down menus, that's the only real difference. They should have made this more a computer that you sync to iTunes to get all your music, etc.. On it, but also be able to get it's own information and deliver music and stuff onto iPods.

Everyone is justifying apple by saying that that is all it is meant to do and it is simple for the regular person. I don't see it like that, and nobody i know does either. I would consider us all regular computer users, I don't know anything about how they run. But this is just a big iPod touch, that has the potential for so much more when it is jail broken. I cant wait for it to be avaiable personally, so it can be ud for more than just being a bigger touch. Yeah the qbiggef screen let's you do more and do more advanced programs, but in the end its the same os, and the same basic idea.

I think I will. It's only going to get better. They wouldn't invest that much time and marketing on a short term project.

I sold my 13" Macbook Pro to get this and I don't miss the laptop at all.

I don't think people will be "loving" the iPad in 3 months but I do think it will have become a part of their every day life.

I refer to my original post in this thread. I think it's about expectations.

Bottom line is - it's a bigger iPod touch. But the real estate offers more options. And by options I mean. PDF viewing on the touch/iphone is ok. it works. It's functional. But on the iPad it's like viewing it on any computer (size wise). Viewing web pages on the expanded real estate is a world of difference.

Watching movies (which I did a lot) on my iPod/iPhone is fine - but the iPad is much better.

It really depends on your usage. At this stage (except for the minority I believe) the iPad is NOT a replacement device. It's a companion device.

So before someone buys it - they need to really assess what they want. Do they want a nice video player that surf the web, you can read on, send email on. Or are they looking for a heavier duty productivity device. Those that (at current) are looking for the latter won't take to the iPad.

I wasn't going to buy one because I fell into that category. But I decided that the extra real state for movie watching/netflix alone was worth the $500 for when my fiancee and I travel. Of course I like all the other stuff it does - but I get that from my iPhone too. BUT - the real estate just makes it nice and easier to share with someone at the same time rather than passing iphones back and forth (for example)

Thanks for all the replies.

The novelty factor is strong with this device. Since Saturday, I have been using it for most of what I would normally use my laptop for. I've bought an ebook (through kindle store) and am reading that too.

Although a bit forced at first, I can see me using the ipad primarily for these daily browsing tasks. The battery life is impressive and it's nice to feel untethered for a whole evening.

So far then it is holding up to the promise of being more of a companion device than some would have you believe. The iPhone is no longer my bathroom buddy.

I was showing a good friend my iPad over the weekend. She was somewhat impressed but, rather insightfully, she asked, "yes it's cool, but will you still be using in a couple of months time?"

This got me thinking. I had to work quite hard to justify the 'use case' for this device to non-believers. The vast majority see this as no more than a big iPod touch. I am convinced that this is the next big thing in computing, but then I bought a Palm Pilot back in the day, and have pretty much early adopted every new gadget. Many of these tech toys are used religiously for a month or so, and then start to collect dust. Will the iPad share this fate?

I don't think so, but wanted to put this out there for discussion. Thoughts? Will you still be obssessing over your iPad in a couple months when the novelty wears off?

Not that all developers have actual units, I think in 2 months we'll be seeing even better apps taking advantage of the hardware and screen. I think you'll be even happier with it than you are now.

I'm not sure what you're showing people. Do you have any apps? Good photos? Books? Everyone who's seen mine, is like - whoa... I should be getting a commission from apple! ;)

Used for most of what your laptop's used for. Reading an ebook. Primarily for daily browsing tasks. Yet the "novelty factor is high" . . . ? Sounds more like it's your laptop replacement, not a novelty.

It's not just showing them what it does or how it does it, but the fact that it is so small and light. The biggest difference for me between a full computer and the Ipad is that I don't sit behind a desk with the Ipad. I'm on the couch, with my family, with it. Regardless that I have a Macbook, that stayed on a desk because it got too hot, needed charging, etc. It was easier to leave it and all the various cables plugged in at the desk than to constantly re-do all that. Now it's portable when I need it to be portable, like for trips, and is my CD-ripping, Iphone/Ipod/Ipad syncing machine, and the Ipad is what I actually sit down with, and I enjoy all of that time with it. You can't really SHOW that to people, you just have to explain it. They either get it or don't. Those of us who bought it will love and enjoy the thing, and word will get out over time. It will sell, I have no doubt. People will come around. Look how quickly many of the naysayers have already turned around on it. What will make the big difference is when the Windows-based tablets come out and people find out how boring and disappointing those are. Right now, people think there is somehow something special coming out in the HP Slate, that it's not going to be just another computer with Windows on it that happens to be a tablet. The techies will love it, the rest of the people will be blase'. And then the Ipad will start to make sense.

Every one that I have showed it to, wants it and plans to get it. Also in reference to an earlier post. Us on the forums are not the average user. For example, I was asked by some family members how typing on the iPad was. I told them I had been using it to type on the forums. They said what are forums?

The average pc user checks email, reads the news, uses faceboook, and checks ebay. All of these things can be done quite well on the iPad, plus you get the ability to play games and watch video. The iPad is all the "average user" could want.

People who bought the iPad because they actually have a use for it: Will be happy in 2 months

People who bought the iPad because it makes them popular: Will be unhappy in 2 months as some other new electronic gadget will come out.
