This may help keep it at its current performance level for longer.

Yes it will. My iPad 8 did suffer noticably from iPadOS 16 and now 18 (but not from 15 and 17), but only in direct comparson with the same iPad running the previos version (a part of which coming from that the Beta is naturally less efficient), and in normal use it doesnt feel slower except less apps can be active without being refreshed when reopened.

3 Gigs of RAM are just not enough for OS 18 imo when even the 12 Pro has double the amount of thsee 3GB which makes it even more ridiculous.

Which ipad do you have? If its not one with home button (->3Gigs RAM) the performance wont take a noticable hit and just the control center an home screen are more than worth it for me.

The 18 beta seems to be working fine on the iPad (A13/3GB). Then again, I don’t really multitask on that one. I’ll try it on the Air 3 as well.

Mind, I’m mainly testing the beta on M1 Air 5 and 18 actually feels snappier than 17 on that one.

I’m definitely updating all my supported devices to iOS 18.

It’s mainly the Mini 6 (A15/4GB) that’s potentially problematic. I already get tons of reloads on 17 on the Mini 6 anyway. I doubt 18 would be that much worse.

I’m currently running the beta on the Air 5 and it works great. I don’t think I’ll have any issues upgrading the iPad Pros (M1/16GB).

Give it a try. Apple doesnt care about "retired" home button iPads anymore and these definitely get slower like mine (8th gen 128GB).
Anything with an A series chip and "wait a sec whete did the home button go?" is probably taking a small and unnoticably hit but although it sounds strange, anything with M1 and above will be like this:
18 actually feels snappier than 17
Apple is really trying to make the iPads more popular so that makes sense to me that they get snappier.

If just the Software itself was more powerful. If iPadOS runs on a 7 year old A10 with 3GB RAM why does the same software run on a faster chip than the best MBA available and 16GB of RAM (double of the base MBA)?
All Mx iPad literally scream to run MacOS, especially the 12.9 inch ones with 16GB RAM...

iPadOS may run on A10/3GB but it doesn’t mean the experience is great. My mom has one and her Messages app keeps crashing on her now. She never deletes messages so she probably has her entire message history since 2012 on there (synced via Messages on iCloud).

It’s like how you get a different experience from a $200 Windows laptop from Walmart versus a top of the line gaming laptop.

One of my main iPad use is Safari and tab reloads are night and day between my Mini 6 with A15/4GB and iPP with M1/16GB.

I use iPads because iOS/iPadOS is touch optimized. Sure, there’s always room for improvement but frankly, I’m not really wanting to run MacOS on the iPad.

Heck, I only use the M1 Mac Mini at home when I’m troubleshooting stuff for my parents. My M1 MacBook Air has been sitting in its laptop bag unused for probably a year now. 🤷‍♀️

or maybe not...

This month, i use my 2023 Ipad to watch "house of dragon" with air pods gen 3 (2022) and every time i try to watch, there is something screwy like a late launch, sound blurry video fuzzy, so I ran these videos to 720 on hand brake and still the first several seconds is not up to par.
THEN i try to rewind a section of confusion, the iPad and video player goes all "HBO 1983 cable tv with aluminum foil on the chord" were one can see the boobs faintly, which was a success back then!

i never had this problem with the 2017 iPad last last year.
my solution is to use a macbook air sold in 2010 to play movies as i di d in 2011 with a pair of Sony™ headphones and enjoy or try yo figure out "who is who" and "why do i care" in this series since they wont (HBO) depict this.

I have many iPads so if I'm bored some day I'll probably sacrifice one for the Beta.

It would be the 2017 IPP but Apple did it dirty it seems. It can be signed up for receiving "iOS 18 Developer betas" but it's not supposed to receive the new version, so nothing is turning up.

So, it'll probably be the Mini 6 instead.

My experience with Apple Betas is that they are *rough* while at the same time pretty interesting.

What app are you using that's showing these problems? Never saw anything similar on my M1 12.9 or M3 13 Pro.

that is what i'm trying figure out, i guess the generic default  one.
i might use VLC or another movie player but really dont want to inflate the ipad with other apps.
this never happened in the 2017 model which baffles my mind.

I didnt claim so. Even on the A12 OS18 is slow and when the admins of my school were about to buy the iPads I was begging them to buy the M1 iPPs, but well, they obviously didnt care. Im in 11th grade so I guess the last year in school will be ok with the rather slow iPad but even the students coming in 8th grade this year still get 2020 iPads so they will have them until OS23 and the A12 will then be 11 yars old...

Curious how iOS 18 runs on mini 6

Iirc it’s the weakest specs of current iPad lineup right
Na it's about in line with the base iPad. In fact it has an A15 in it as opposed to A14 in the base iPad but it's clocked lower than usual, so they're pretty close.

These forums aside, the VAST majority of iPad users have normal cheap iPads with 4GB RAM (mini 6 here) or even 3 GB. Apple must reasonably make sure that the OS works great on these devices.

Thanks for clarifying

Still curious how it fares I guess with bugs more particularly though performance and battery life

Great? I doubt it. Even 17 has hiccups on the mini 6.

It should still run fairly decently though. I'm running the 18 beta on an iPad 9 (A13/3GB) and I haven't noticed any slowdowns vs 17.

I always tell myself that I’ll wait until the official iOS release in September, and then I always end up caving and downloading either public beta 1 or 2. Turns out I have no patience/willpower.
Same.. I just installed the Public Beta on my iPhone 13 and iPad 9th Gen. I don’t see any major issues yet, but I’m loving the dark icons. I’ll keep my iPhone 15 on iOS 17.5.1 for now since it is my daily driver.
