As far as I'm aware, Apple uses a shared memory architecture so the RAM is available to whatever needs it (CPU, GPU, storage, etc).
Sharing memory with the GPU has been around since the 70s. Even the Apple ii has it. Then using hard drives for memory as well came about in the 90s if I remember correctly. Literally every computer can do this.

I recently got the air 3 and it immediately became my daily driver for all my work and youtube channel. Thanks to ipad os I can use my mouse and make it into a desktop environment where I can edit and upload my videos. But I have been noticing how limiting lightning is. I have to carry two dongles and a powered usb hub in order to use my peripherals.

So I have been considering upgrading just for USB C but depending on what the new pros offer, I might wait until the 2020 models since speed wise, this ipad air 3 is perfect. It is literally just USB C that I want in order to make my setup perfect.

iPad OS may not need 6GB ram, but it comes in handy when you do a lot of heavy photo editing on your iPad.

How heavy does it have to be for one to recognise the difference? My iPad with 2GB edits photos just as fast as my iPad with 4GB.
In fact my Air 2 feels almost as quick today as my iPad Pro when getting stuff done.
