Yes, you're correct .... however, I'm just one that sits in an easy chair to use the iPad. :)
Me too, at least my iPad Mini. I also use a 12.9” iPad Pro for productivity (always with either keyboard or Pencil), but I only chose it over a MacBook because of the Pencil.

I’m team iPad. I have a MacBook I just don’t use it often. I much prefer an iPad. My job also supplies a work MacBook I must use so I still use a laptop but for personal needs I’m fine with just an iPad.

I gave up on laptops some years ago. I have an iPad and an iMac. Next year I’ll upgrade the iPad to the newest iPad Pro 12.9” and change the iMac to a Mac Studio and a display, probably a Pro XDR.

I use iPad for content consumption (magazines, news, books, YouTube videos, movies when on planes, etc.)... I also use it for taking notes for school and work. I would not use a laptop for these things.

What do you guys think about OLED screens and these tasks (in particular, reading books and taking notes) - will it be easy on the eyes compared to the current screens? I am currently using an iPad Pro 1st Gen.

I am a basic user. Still debating whether to buy the current m2 iPad Pro or wait out for the new iPad Pro/air. For context, I am using a 3rd generation 12.9 iPad Pro

If you need the new iPad, you should buy it. Is it a need or just a desire for something new?

Otherwise, I would wait to see the reviews for the new models. I don’t buy ANYTHING on release.

I understand that some folks can use their iPad to replace the need for a laptop, and more power to them. Especially, if they have a nice desktop computer waiting in their workspace. I prefer to use the iPad purely as a tablet. Great for content consumption and reading. Also, useful as a secondary screen with Universal Control.

It has been my experience that adding accessories tends to get in the way of the simplicity of the iPad. When I use a keyboard case, it just feels like a poor substitute for my MBA. Even when I use the pencil, it feels awkward because I hate writing on the glass screen. But, when I strip all of that away and just use the iPad as a touch first tablet with a light case, everything just feels so natural and easy.

If I want a laptop experience, I will use a Macbook. If I want a tablet experience, I’ll use an iPad. If I am leaving the house and not sure what I might need, I default to the MBA……then, I know that I will be covered.

This is my experience exactly. The bigger iPads feel like they're trying to replace my MacBooks, but they do a bad job of that.

I see them as two distinct products. It will never be either or for me. They have different use cases and each one is better for different tasks. I don't see the point in getting one and trying to get it to do everything and then being disappointed when it can't or the it effects the experience.

bravo!
That was a perfect explanation
pertaining of two different devices
that perform the same tasks.

I might get a iPad mini for obsolete outdoor wooded area cycling
so I can photograph that deer and listen to great music,
without the chance getting a phone call.

And your exact mentioned own example is not logical to me. I’d pick an iPhone for that outdoor task any day. More portable, optional available for calls which is really basic setting stuff, plenty models and price points to chose from and many more camera options than an iPad mini. You’re going to photograph the deer with the build in wide angle lens? That does sound a tad unusual.

Pretty much everyone has a mobile phone for the obvious advantages and a small subsection like additional screens that much that they fit a mostly optional tablet into that lifestyle.

Although smart phones, tablets, and portable computers, all have distinct utility they also have many uses that intersect. All three can be used to communicate, consume media, and compute (run programs and apps). In various environments or situations, a single device, either or, can certainly adequately meet all of an individual's requirements.

I've always had laptops as my main computer, but right now I'm actually debating on whether to move to a desktop and use an iPad for portable computing or get a new laptop.

I currently have a 7th gen iPad that I got as a gift a few years ago. When I first got it I honestly didn't use it much at all. I had never been interested much in tablets as already had a laptop and a smartphone. I didn't really see the need for an in-between device. After using the iPad for a while, though, I realized that I much prefer traveling or just moving about with it over a laptop. Nowadays when I go on trips I always take the iPad instead of the laptop.

This is also why I personally don't like iPad keyboard combinations or the slew of tablet-laptop hybrids available on the Windows side. They just become too bulky, which imo detracts from the main appeal of the tablet.

iPhone is more portable with better cameras, and you can use Airplane mode if you dont want to get phone calls.

thanks for the advice, im using the iHone 12 min I now and need more screen.

perhaps waiting for the new line of iPad mini's might be a better option then buying one now.

I have the M1 iPP 11. It replaced my 2019 16" MBP in November 2021 for taking care of my real estate and property management businesses. My wife needs to replace her original iPad Air, so I will give her the M1 iPad Pro 11, and get myself a new M3 iPad Pro 11 this coming year. I love my iPP. It is the most flexible computer I have ever had, and I just can't ever see myself going back to a traditional laptop, unless maybe Apple gives the MBP's touch. I would personally just like the ability to boot into macOS on my iPP when I am using a keyboard, trackpad, and monitor, and just use iPad OS when using as a tablet. To me, that would be the perfect mobile/hybrid device with the best of both worlds.
Well believe it or not, after loving my M1 iPP 11" for the past two years, I have decided to upgrade to the 2024 12.9" iPP. Both cases I have for the 11" were made for the 12.9" so no problem there. I will just have to get a new Logitech Combo Touch for the 12.9". I was excited about getting the new 11", but now I am totally ecstatic at the prospect of bumping up to the 12.9". Looking forward to the extra screen real estate and the new OLED screen.

The iPad mini will never fill your photo needs. Like everyone has been saying, the cameras on the iPhones, especially the PM's are much better than the iPad Mini's will ever be. You can also put your phone in "Airplane mode" or "Do Not Disturb mode" and no phone calls to worry about. The Pro Max models have almost as much screen real estate as the iPad Mini with the much better cameras and much better screen.

my Nikon D500 never fulfilled my photo needs.

personally I find the iPhone limited due to the screen size
while I'm secluded 15 miles away from civilization.

And your photo needs are solely driven by the screen size these days it seems, although of course there’s an argument being made that a dedicated professional camera with a completely customised interface and optical viewfinder as well as optional screen accessories is the most capable photography solution, and was discarded for an iPad.

Maybe in the US the ipad or the ipad pro is not as expensive as it is here in South Africa, the cost is something really quite unbelievable, the exchange rate, other costs, make it really an extremely unaffordable product, I bought an ipad in 2013, ipad mini 2, which has been a huge benefit in my life, but now 2023/2024, it is just not feasible to replace it..

Hard to believe that it should be so expensive, more than a decent 2nd hand Japanese branded car...
