I wonder if OS 4.0 for iPad would coincide with the release of the second generation iPad.

Exactly. iPhone os 4.0 will probably be optimized for ipad v2. Sure, the current ipad will be able to run it, but it will run it just as good as the iPhone 3G runs iPhone OS 3.0 (it runs it, but nothing show stopping).

We have no idea when the new iPad will be out, but I doubt that it would be this year. Also apple seem to wait two generations rather than one to make their hardware obsolete. So this generation iPad will do everything in 4.0, but not necessarily everything in 5.0.

The fall upgrade will likely be in 6 months, the next gen iPad will likely be a minimum of a year... So another 6 months on top of the wait for 4.0.

I'd say, buy it now if you want it... If you wait on technology, you'll always be waiting for the next best thing.

It won't be a year until the next update. The iPod Touch updates on an average every 245 days. The MBP, an average of 180 days. I see it probably somewhere in between. There is no reason for Apple to wait a full 12 months for an ipad update. The more updates they do, the more they will sell. The reason the iPhone is on a 12 month cycle are due to the contracts of cellphone carriers (which are 12-24 months, never less). This greatly restricts the number of potential customers. If they had biannual hardware updates, they would sell as many per launch.

iPhone OS 4.0 will not make the current ipad anymore than it already is. I run OS 3.0 on my iPhone 3G. There's no doubting that iPhone OS 3.0 is optimized for the iPhone 3GS, but I would go as far to say my iPhone 3G is obsolete.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

It's hard enough waiting for the 3G iPad! No way I can wait until fall!

I don't even care if they charge for the update!

:D

1. I didn't know Apple said they won't charge the upgrade fee.

2. I didn't know the fee is only $10. I thought it's more like $30 or $35, but I now think waiting 5 months to save $30 is not worth the wait.

They charged $29 for Snow Leopard. You really think they'd charge anything near that for 4.0?

Nope, not worth the wait. Nothing significant will come out then for the iPad so why not just buy now if you are in the market. The upgrade will be free.
