Yeah - this looks bad. I don't think Microsoft have understood that Metro works much better on tablets than desktops. Desktops use a mouse and keyboard, metro is not designed for that kind of optimal input. Most people I know just default to using the desktop as soon as W8 boots. Some (like me) haven't even upgraded.

I tried Windows 8 for about 2 weeks, but I went back to 7. Windows 7 was, is and will always be the pinnacle of great Microsoft OSes (XP was better than Vista, yes, but in no way is it better than 7) for me, as long as they continue with the whole 'let's make a hybrid UI' thing. I like my desktop simple, with a start menu, a taskbar, a background, and some icons. So I can focus on my work and not have to constantly do silly things just to turn off the computer when I need to - like put my mouse at the bottom right, power, shut down....what is this???. Start -> shut down. Easy, simple.

I'm a big OS X user and sure, Apple has changed the OS with introduction of iCloud and stuff that annoy me a bit, but it's much easier to get used to. The integration of iOS and OS X is actually very well done (not so much in Lion, but ML got stuff really working nicely and less bug-ridden).

Windows 8 is just a complete mess. I only use it for gaming, productivity - like Office (I prefer it on Windows) - and .NET development. In no way, shape or form do I need a more 'modern' UI with fancy tiles and crap that distract my productivity and my gaming needs.

Microsoft, you're a great company, but you only get it right about half the time....

My point was there is no classic start menu, understanding what I meant certainly doesn't require a rocket science degree, or does it?:confused::confused:

So when you said "There is no start button" you meant "There is no classic Start Menu"? Well, you were saying one thing, and meaning something completely different. So a degree in Rocket Science wouldn't help me there, a degree in Clairvoyance would have suited me better.

Yeah because having the graphic of a start button is really important, especially after the loads of paragraphs I wrote to explain my point of view specifically talking about the limitations of THE START SCREEN, discussing things like hundreds of unorganized programs and lack of folders. I wasn't saying one thing and meaning another, I just never thought someone would literally think I was mad because I lost a little button rather than understand the incredibly obvious inference to the start menu.

Lol come on don't pull my leg, did you really think I was griping about the start button itself? I'd like to chalk it up to good natured reverse trolling because its hard to believe, anyhow now that you do know my point (welcome!) let's get back on topic.

I did think you were, I've seen dozens of people bitching about the button on Neowin. I'm not trying to troll you.

I like Metro a lot and hope they build on it

Win 7 App Launchers
Most Used Apps = Desktop, but it usually ends up cluttered with shortcuts/folders/docs and other crap
General = Start Menu, which also ends up becoming cluttered with crap too, except the crap is now in tree formation

OS X
Most Used Apps = Dock
General = Launchpad

Win 8
Most Used Apps = Startscreen, which uses the tiles to relay info instead of just being static buttons. I think that's a better use of space
General = Swipe Down and Poke

Except for people using Windows 8 on a non-touchscreen (which sucks) and the need to pin a folder, I never understood Metro complaints

Microsoft is really ambitious with Windows now, but I still feel like this just isn't fixing the glaring flaws with the platform. Desktop and the Start Screen don't work harmoniously, there is a gargantuan learning curve for an average-consumer OS, and Blue just seems to be Windows 8+.

I'm still very interested in a Surface 2.0 to replace my laptop, though.

I agree that the metro start screen is better than the classic start menus tree hierarchy ONLY if they added folder capability to it. With folders I'd definitely ditch the old start menu. I'm just having trouble seeing how you guys navigate with a lot of programs, or do you guys not have a lot of programs installed?

I'd love to know MS thinking on not having folders. IOS and Android even have folders and they are far more primitive OS'.

I just search for everything. Type a few letters and hit enter.

The problem with search is, what if you can't remember the name of the program you want? For instance, I have a bunch of graphics apps I only use once in a while. I know I have a photo editing program installed, but I don't remember the name. Now, did it have "photo" in its name, or did it use some funky spelling like "foto"? Ugh.

I just keep all my commonly used apps and shortcuts pinned to the start screen, and any rarely used one get type-to-searched. This setup has worked alright for me so far. Everything's quick to find, and I haven't had any showstopping issues.

Then again, I don't have a crapton of programs installed. Normally, I just keep what I need, and only have a handful of extraneous programs lying around for those just in case moments.

Maybe its just my work flow, many times I don't know what I'm searching for. But I do have a ton of programs usually installed on my computers.

You guys all have great suggestions, but it still completely boggles the mind that we can't have a folder option in the start screen. Wouldn't folders at least give us the option to be more organized? Can you remember how annoying ios was before it had folders? For you ios and android users what if you lost the ability to have folders to organize your programs in?
