Windows iDisk Utility for XP - I need a very small favor

I need someone to download and install the iDisk Utility for Windows XP (http://www.mac.com/1/iDiskUtility_WindowsXP.zip) install it (A PC is needed of course), and e-mail me the contents it installs into the selected folder (including the .exe file). I can't install the program on these school computers but, I need to access a file that's on my iDisk but I can't.

I can't use the Windows' Network Places to create a Web folder since it's restricted. I've done this before but, I can't do it now since the computer won't even let me install the program, plus I forgot my USB flash drive at home. When you install the iDisk utility for XP it basically decompresses itself in a folder, I just need the files from that folder - they can be in a .zip file it's ok. But, I need them to be e-mailed to me.

If anyone can do this for me I'll be very happy...thanks!

Can you map a network drive? If you can, I'm pretty sure you can just put the network path as \\idisk.mac.com\username and it will connect to it.

Nah I can't I've tried everything, I've even tried a few tricks like opening IE and going to 'File Open', and trying to select "Open as Web Folder"....sadly the web folder option has been restricted! Ugh... I hate restricted Windows machines

It's 17mb file so that won't work. Darn...I'd use AIM to ask a friend but they block the AIM ports here, Yahoo won't work because I can't install it. MSN messenger works but I have no friends on there! Even the Java version of AIM and Yahoo don't work. When I get home I'm installing the iDisk Utility on my USB drive and gluing it to my notebook! *sigh*

It looks like the address you entered is not right. From command prompt (Start > run > "cmd {return}), try this.

net use * \\idisk.mac.com\ibook238 * /user:ibook238

I can't use the Run command *restricted*

The address was typed in right, Explorer is just acting dumb

If you can use Task Manager, you may be able to start cmd from there. Press ctrl+shift+escape to bring up task manager, then go file > new process and type cmd. worth a shot

Wow, I'm learning a lot in this thread... that worked for me too!
And I though MY company was restrictive in their computers. I never thought I would be able to network into my iDrive! Awesome!

I highly doubt that, this is a big school and everything is stored on the newtork, by the time it would take for them to unrestrict me (as if that would actually ever happen) I'd be home and installing the utility to my USB drive

I might be leaving soon but if anyone can still help I'd be happy

Seriously, depending on how bad you need the file, maybe you could let E into your account with the password, and then change the password later.

You say the file is 17mb, but could it be zipped, sliced and diced to be put in smaller chunks and sent to gmail or something?

Network administrators are so paranoid about worms and viruses that they restrict everything so that the technology you have is useless. And they are almost always unsympathetic to Mac users.

Like I said go and see the network administrator to access the iDisk by e's method.

On these computers we can use USB drive, use our own mice from home, we have all these Adobe programs (since this is a Graphic Design course) and we can do a lot of things. Heck I even ran Firefox off of my USB drive, but that's at home (That'll teach me to never forget it again). Oh well, I think I'll be here for another 45 min more since I have another project to do.

Alternatives for starting a command shell
Find the cmd.exe command in c:\windows\system32 and double click on it assuming you are allowed to browse files in system32

or
From an excel macro:

Public Sub gocmd()
Shell "c:\windows\system32\cmd"
End Sub


or create a new shortcut somwhere and put c:\windows\systme32\cmd as the target of the shortcut.

I can get into the system32 folder but, unfortunetly the shortcut didn't work as well as I had hoped
