wow, im really sorry for your experience w/ the imac

yeah, hopefully these people on these forum can help you out but instead of always mentioning the negative stuff, heres some positive things ive been experiencing
my imac (see sig) has been working great
of course i get beach balls randomly... maybe1 or 2 times a day? or none, lol
but i mean, which computer is perfect right? (unless you have a mac pro, lol)
but i run the typical apps u mentioned like safari and itunes. i also run aperture and photoshop which runs pretty well too.

when i upgraded my ram from 1gb to 3 gb, it made a night and day difference!!

anyways, i really wish the best of luck to you

OS X is supposed to be RAM hungry, but not to the extent where you need 3GB as a minimum. There's definitely something wrong with your system, hardware or software wise.

I'd suggest a fresh install of OS X, and if that doesn't help, call Apple Support :)

Ok, I did a fresh install and have the updates ran. I got rid of the Windows partition and have nothing other that what is on the OS. I won't install Office for Mac or any other junk. I also picked up fresh memory from the store in Annapolis. So if I get buggered up again I will try swapping that.

One thing though. What is up with all the "You don't know how to use a computer." comments? No ****! That is why I am bitching and begging for help. I know how to bounce around in Cisco routers and switches. Maybe a firewall or two. But I am a complete tard when it comes to moving around in anything else.

Anyway, if it works then fine. This has been a really great experience. Just awesome.

AfterDeath, I'd suggest downloading Neooffice (www.neooffice.org - I think) if you use M.Soft Office. I must admit we have Office on one of our Macs at work and we seem to get nothing but trouble, I have NeoOffice on my work Mac and also on my iMac at home and it runs very well.

Hope you get your mac sorted, they are a great machine, I've been a Mac user for about 12 years and I still love using them, don't mind PC's but couldn't own one, having said that I do have XP on my iMac.

YES! That was it! I installed Office, ran the updates, and in a few minutes the system began to freeze. I then got rid of Office and did a reboot. Running fine now! Thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you!

I'm glad to hear everything worked out. Is anyone else surprised that the program that caused all the problems was from Microsoft? :p

So what have you learned about running Microsoft products on any machine?

Never used it myself but have heard Mac Office is pretty darn good (pricey but good) is there a ver or 2 that wasn't or just all around bad ?

Where did you hear it was good? I bought it, had to use it for a semester. It was god awful. Slow, confusing, cluttered, ugly, etc (just the things that ail most all Microsoft products). Then I got iWork and have never looked back.

Office 2008 is surpassed in its suck only by names such as ME, Bob and Vista. That should give you an idea of the kind of release it is.

If you absolutely have to run Office, grab yourself a copy of VMWare and run the PC version in a Virtual Machine.

With the exception of email, I've found that NeoOffice works fine as a replacement for my needs. Even iWork is better.

I am using NeoOffice now. It works fine and gets everything done that I need to get done.

I am sorry for the initial bad attitude that I came in with. I was beating my head against the wall and it seemed that the only help I was getting was insults and no help at all. Most of this came from the Apple store. That was the worst experience in customer service I have ever had.

Anyway, things seem to be working here and I am going to shrug off the negative and see if I can get some happy times with this machine now.

I think you have bad ram as well. I have a bad ram stick on my desk and it just happened to be the same kind my mac uses, I stuck it in the mac and got the exact same problems you did. LONG spinning beach ball. However it may be a failing harddrive as well or possibly a cooling issue. Regardless you have a 1 year warranty, I would forget the apple store and just call directly for a fix. Going into electronics retail stores for help is rarely pretty. I know I used to work at Circuit City and Best Buy doing it and the person who fixes the computers are always under a ton of stress to fix and sell and I'm sure its probably the same way at an apple store.
