Windows xp pro $25 too good too be true ?
Absolutely. There are hundred of these sites around that claim they sell software for extremely low prices and they are all scams. The cheapest way to get a legal copy of XP is to buy an OEM version.

OEM *is* a full copy, just not one you can get on store shelves like in Best Buy/CompUSA/etc. It's the version of XP Pro sold to companies like Dell and Gateway and HP to install on their own line of products. Same software, just typically in some form of brand-specific packaging.

You save money buying an OEM version because typically it will install on any machine - except the Dell ones. They're tied to the BIOS in a Dell machine and usually will not install on anything but a Dell, but I've read cases and heard from people that said it'll install on anything. I don't have anything but Dell hardware to test so I can't say yes or no on that one.

I think you're safe getting an OEM copy as long as it comes with the hologram CD and the Certificate of Authenticity sticker (the COA light green sticker with the Product Key you normally find on the PC it's installed on).

Save yourself a few bucks, find a real OEM copy from someplace and buy it.

Hope this helps...

Why trouble yourself so much? Just do it like most teenagers and get it from the free online retailer.

I would at least wait till Vista is out before forking out coin for a new Microsoft OS.

They also have the OEM version of OS X 10.4 Tiger for $25

So we all know how legitimate those copies are and how easy it is to get an overstock OEM version of Tiger.

Of course what do you expect from a Malaysian company, besides the possibility that you credit card info will be sold to somebody else.

Yes too good to be true.

On a separate note, if you buy an OEM version you can't upgrade it later.
Not true. I don't know what the license says you can or cannot do, but the installation process proceeds without incident.

What amin meant is that you cannot upgrade from an OEM copy of XP to Vista. When Vista comes out you will need to buy a full version of that (can be OEM again) rather than an an upgrade version.

Actually, retail price is $600, subtract $570 and you end up with $30...

I think what's even scarier about this deal is not the pirated software, its giving them your credit card info. *shivers... "Back away slowly, then run very very fast" :D

These sort of sites generally only exist to get credit card numbers, they don't even bother trying to pass off pirated software as genuine.

On the MS website there's a list of people they are either suing or have sued for selling fake copies of Windows.

Just buy the OEM version of XP (Home or Professional, I don't see much benefit of Pro). I'm not sure what someone's saying about not upgrading. I had an OEM version on my old PC and it upgraded to SP2 fine, and upgrading the OEM on my iMac to Vista worked fine.

or you can go to Microsoft to get a good deal on the software. Typically XP is either free or $15 depending on the setup for your school.

Find your school, and reek the deals of getting an inexpensive copy of XP (and other Microsoft software). All legit too. Students only, sadly. :D

Seem like this is highly dependent on
1) if your school is a member
2) which departments are eligable

Trust me, I would not touch Vista with a ten foot pole. It's DRMed to hell and I won't buy it until either A) The Open Source community finds a patch and disables all that crap or B) Windows decides to stop monkeying around with what it does with our computer.
