Got it!!! At least on my WRTP54G.

Set the Linksys to do 64 bit WEP. It'll likely show 4 keys. Use the first one - or another if, above, you tell it to use something other than the first. Do NOT use the password. Use the KEY.

Set AirPort to use WEP 40/128-bit HEX.

Type in the key. Note that "MacsRule" is the fake network name in the example, not to be confused with the "iGaryRules" passphrase. Bob should, at this point, be your uncle.

Intuitive, no?

PS If this works for you, I do NOT want the iTunes card. It was a fun challenge, and I'm glad I know how to set it up now, should I need it.

You need my social security number and pin, too, right?
Yes. But not bank account or credit card info. As an additional friendly service, I want to see if those are secure enough on your systems.

yes, check the other passkeys, I have always used the passkey instead of the passphrase for connecting.

didn't think there was any other way to do it

iGary, how about you just manually reset the router, then connect to it without a password, then set up a new password, and plug that into your macs in system preferences, and see if it works. There should be a reset button on the back of your router. Holding it in should reset the whole router to default.

Oh, and use WPA instead of WEP. WEP is "easy" to crack.

A little off topic but since were here in a wireless ? thread.

How easy is it to link my AP express off of a dlink router.

I have the dlink so i can hardwire internet to my xbox 360, but i would rather use my AP instead of the dlink wireless. So how exactly can i just run ethernet from my dlink to my AP and just have my wireless be the AP.

Basically, you just connect them with an ethernet cable. It's best (I think) if you go into Airport Admin Utility, go to the Network tab, and deselect the "Distribute IP addresses" option. But it's all pretty easy.

How do I do this?

I haven't been using t he passphrase, FWIW.
Go to the Airport menulet, select "Other...", type in the network name, select "WEP 40/128-bit hex" for "Wireless Security", then enter the key beneath that.

Edit: or, if your SID is broadcast, just choose the network in the menulet, pick the WEP type ("WEP 40/128-bit hex"), and enter the key.

It worked. You rule.

I'll give my nephew your iTunes Card - he just had surgery. ;)
I'm happy to hear it - and I hope your nephew's recovery goes well. Is his mother the one who never replies to email? Will you know if he even got the card? ;)

Yeah, that's her. :)

I'm sending iTunes cards via mail now - people delete the gift ones as junk I think.

So, JSW - do you think this was a 10.4.5 issue? I've never had to do this before.

I haven't tried WEP in a while except for via the AirPort Express units, so I don't know. Since it used to work for you, and then failed, I'm guessing that maybe it is... but it's just a guess. Buy an Intellimac out of the local Apple Store - should have 10.4.4 installed - and see if that works OK. ;)

Ugh. Now I have to take the router back (according to the significant other).

I think I would rather keep it as a spare than sit in the return line at Best Buy.

That's too bad. Unless it was really pricey, I'd think the time spent returning it would outweigh the cost. Perhaps you could use them both as bookends for really tiny books, then set up the second one with free internet access but which only allows people access to here or here.

It was only $45 it will get hidden deep in my secret closet of tricks while Rob is at work tomorrow.

;)

We find new things out about you every day. These "tricks" of yours... do they mind being kept in the secret closet? Is it because they are afraid to come out of the closet? Has Dwyer ever been such a client?

You are so multifaceted!

Came back and the machine had slept and your method no longer works.

I fracking give up.

Just curious why you're using WEP instead of WPA...I've always had problems with WEP but none with WPA.

When you put the WEP 40 password in the Mac, are you putting the "$" before it?

iGary said:
Cause that doesn't work either.

I'll call Apple dorks tomorrow.
WPA does work, at least on mine, if I use "WPA-Preshared Key" on the Linksys and "WPA-Personal" when setting up the Mac.

However, my Macs don't sleep aside from the displays (with two kids, I can't - so why should they?), so I don't know how that's messing things up.

Someone enlighten me - are you serious? Is this a joke? What does the '$' do? I never use it.
