It shows a hacker who was able to get some rudimentary data input into the iPhone using a usb keyboard. Obviously it's not a good solution right now since it wouldn't work with most apps. But it shows it can be done.

It's sort of similar to this gamepad that is used, though I think it only works with jailbroken apps.

Hopefully apple gets its act together and give us something that works properly.

IIRC, Apple sold an external keyboard for the Newton...which would imply the same about the handwriting recognition technology that it used. I don't see any reason why they eventually wouldn't provide support for it...especially since they already make a bluetooth keyboard...

hello, the Apple you're talking about is not the same since 1997.

I have a bad feeling about iphone: is too limited by design, but the appaerence of the user interface makes you think that have potential.

The lack of bluetooth data transfer intrigues me - Apple gains royalities over any acessory that have a made for iphone or ipod logo. An operational bt stack would provide a wider market of acessories for iphone, satisfiyng booth the company and users.

But as the time passes, its obvious that iphone will never get an operational bluetooth stack - the base software as remained the same since the first iteration of iphone. Also they are continuosly pursuing the media that their iphone user base got a rank in best satisfaction, so there's no need to change.

Great, this is a start. Hope Apple can provide such keyboard in the future.

External Keyboard

I, too, got really frustrated and began thinking of ways to get around the problem. After awhile a solution struck me that allows you to pair an external keyboard (wireless or attached) to an iPhone or iPod Touch (it would also, theoretically, give the possibility of a mouse, but I don't see the point of that with a touch screen).

It works in all applications w/o any modifications or hacks -- no jailbreak is necessary. And, best of all, there is no need to get Apple approval -- they couldn't block it's functionality unless they made major architectural revisions that would mess up every application already on the market.

I'm currently trying to contact developers to sell them the solution but I'm having a real hard time finding the correct contact person (I've never done something like this before). I'd appreciate any advice as to how to do this.

If anyone here knows someone from the R&D department of a peripherals company like Logitec, Belkin, etc. please ask them to contact me, I'd love to sell the solution so we could all type away on this great little pocket computer.

Thanks

P.S. Assuming I do get hold of an R&D person... does anyone have any advice as to how much money to request for selling them the solution -- i.e. what is the market value of this solution?

someone check out Macally's booth at Macworld

I was at macworld yesterday and did a quick flyby of Macally's booth (to the left of apple's main presentation area as you walk in the door) and thought I saw their bluetooth keyboard for iphone in a display case. I should have snapped a pic.

I didn't get a chance to talk to anyone as I was short on time. I would appreciate if anyone could talk to the Macally folks and see what response they have gotten from apple about this keyboard.

thanks!

You were wrong. :p
I wonder if this means they will add keyboard support.

I still Don't understand how people would rather type on a keyboard that small rather than chug it out with the screen keyboard. I get frustrated everytime I try to type on one of my friends crappy envy or blackberry keyboard. A physical bluetooth keyboard would be awesome but I wouldn't use anything smaller than the apple bluetooth keyboard.

Bluetooth Keyboard for iPhone 3.0

I should think someone would have manufactured a portable keyboard by now for iPhone 3.0. If Tom Tom could attach it's GPS accessory to the iPhone, and blood sugar could be measured through the iPhone, why can't anybody make a portable physical keyboard for it?

There's a whole market out there for this accessory. I have quite a lot of friends with clumsy big hands and fingers who just can't get used to typing on a virtual keyboard.

is this still not possible? I haven't attempted it, but I'd like to pair my iphone with the apple bluetooth keyboard

No, I think Apple understands that you can't type quickly on any mini-keyboard... there is always a need for one of those bluetooth keyboards that allow you to have the full size keyboard experience.

I want to be able to type long notes very quickly during meetings without having to unfold a big notebook computer.

Man, you would think Apple (and 3rd party developers) would reveal their plans.

In the mean time, I am forced to check into other options.

a developer could do this, it just would only work in that App, not native iphone apps. at least for now..

BT Keyboard on iPhone 3.0

I should think it's now possible with 3.0. It doesn't have to me a mini-keyboard, it can be a foldable full-sized keyboard without the numeric pad.

I don't need it myself, see, but I know people with big hands and fingers who do, and they're a market unto themselves. The manufacturers don't have to make millions of them, but they could sure make some big bucks making a few hundred thousand of them.

Offering a keyboard would imply that the existing touch keyboard is less than stellar. Not going to happen on Stevie's watch.

Maybe Jobs made a mistake at the Keynote by making a fun of physical keyboard.

Apple could have made one for iPhone and sell for $59 at least.

external keyboard would be cool but not exactly sure how useful it'll be. I guess for word processing, it's a must.

I wouldn't wanna do it via bluetooth, I'd be afraid of burning too much battery power. Just use the dock connector and I think it'd be fine. Secondly, yes I would love one to use the notes App in class or something and then be able to port those notes to my computer later on. That's what I'd do.

Jobs makes a lot of mistakes and yes, a bluetooth keyboard would be extremely useful! Forget the dock, it's good for charging the phone, that's it. If it's not a bluetooth connection, it's just more crap to get tangled up and eventually broken. Like those 18th century earbuds Apple keeps insisting are relevant. Another Jobs mistake.

BT Keyboard on iPhone 3.0

Apple doesn't have to make them. Some enterprising manufacturer should be able to produce them as a peripheral, using the iPhone 3.0 OS supplied by Apple.

In fact, it would be foolish of Apple to make them itself. That wouldn't make good economics. But it would be foolish of Apple to stop others from making them.

External keyboard for ipod/iphone

I am not sure if this works but, I saw something called a KeyBot which will run with a 9 volt battery and works with a foldable Targus keyboard. Hope this helps!
