The iOS-5 device must be Docked in one way or another.

I have not seen anybody mention the fact the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch will not sync on its own you have to have it plugged external power source such as a remote docking station or a external battery pack. This is a minor disappointment for me but I have an Ivyskin ZappPack which I use for syncing independently of a remote docking station. If you do not have such a charging source WiFi Sync is worthless until you do.

You can just click 'Sync Now' even when you're not connected to a power source. It will only automatically sync when you're charging. You can sync it whenever you want.

I wish mine would auto sync. No auto sync again last night on my iPhone or iPad.

Since this thread is about issues with wifi syncing, I'll post my issue in here - I've tried getting help in two other threads with no luck so far. Please, if anyone has encountered the the following issue, or has an idea what may be causing it, I'd really appreciate any suggestions....

I am running ios 5 on an iphone 4, and am having a small issue when it comes to transferring music wirelessly from my pc to my iphone. Now as far as the song actually transferring to the iphone, no problems there, however, if I try to edit any of the tags (artist, album, etc.), or add artwork it doesn't show the changes on the phone. I've tried syncing a few more times, but the changes still don't show. If you look at the file on my phone within itunes, everything displays properly. The only way I can correct this problem is by plugging the phone in through USB and syncing that way. Has anyone else come across this issue? I also had a similar problem this afternoon when I tried creating a playlist and dragging specific songs into this playlist. When I attempted to do this wirelessly, it would not allow me to drag the file into the playlist, however, once it was plugged in there was no problems. I've tried restarting itunes, as well as my computer, but still no change. I appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

What about if the MacBook with iTunes running goes to "sleep?"

The the backup does not run. I would expect that in the future Apple might implement a wake-on-lan function to wake the computer up if it goes to sleep and knows that there are devices out there that rely on wifi sync, then when the device wants to sync it will send a packet that will wake up the computer long enough for the sync to complete.

However, none of this addresses the problem I am having, which is that while my iPhone 4 with iOS 5 is syncing over wifi, my iPad 2 with iOS 5 refuses to sync wirelessly no matter what I do with it.

I was able to finally solve the problem I mentioned earlier in this thread. I was on the phone with Apple for about 2 1/2 hours. We tried all the basic stuff and nothing was working. They seemed really stumped as to why I was having this problem. What finally worked was completely uninstalling iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour and other associated programs and then reinstalling iTunes. The guy didn't expect this to work but it did. So, if anyone is having the same problem I mentioned in my earlier post try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.

have the same thing. what is more annoying is that in the beginning everything was working fine. at some stage iPhone disappearing from iTunes every time I unplug USB and after plugging back the box "Sync via wifi" gets unchecked.
reloaded both MAC and iPhone - doesn't help.
reinstalling iTunes is really too "hard" solution. :(

I really don't want to have to reload iTunes to fix this, I hope they come out with a patch for it.

There's 2 settings that need to be fiddled with if you're having problems. One is 'Prevent devices from syncing automatically' under preferebces -> devices and the other is to turn off 'open iTunes when this iDevice is connected'. Those seem to be the common 2 fixes when nothing else works

i had to deselect apps music video ringtones for it to work properly.....i lost everything, reinstalling over 300 apps right now:(.... but now it works

I'm still not auto syncing. I guess I may try rebooting my Mac Pro today. Doubt it will help but don't now what else to try.

I was having this problem earlier.

I found the solution was:

I'm on Windows.

I went into Services and looked for the service called APPLE MOBILE DEVICE. I then right clicked on it and choose RESTART from the menu. Since doing this I've been able to wirelessly sync again on both the iPad and iPhone. Perhaps the APPLE MOBILE DEVICE had crashed or stopped working for some reason?

Here's a screen shot:

It was definitely the cause for me (APPLE MOBILE DEVICE), because when I went back into Services again and manually stopped it, and then tried to wirelessly sync again, the problem was there again.

I then re-enabled it and wireless sync works again

Hope this info helps guys. :)

Thank You. This appears to have solved my issue! :D

Also had to do this (found on apple discussion board)
i went to device manager (control panel - view by icons - device manager) then right clicked my pcs name and clicked "scan for hardware changes" i then restarted itunes and everything was working

Rebooting my Mac fixed the problem. Amazing, and never even occurred to me to try it, as I've never needed to reboot my Mac to fix anything.

wifi sync is a disaster so far, sometimes it works sometimes i have to restart itunes, sometimes i have to plug my ipod back into the computer, what a mess

Found solution- sync greyed out and no auto icloud backup

Thanks for so many great leads in solving problems and in knowing I'm not the only frustrated user. I was getting the sync will resume when (computer name) is available and I went through the steps of setting all the indicators on itunes and phone to sync via wi-fi and doing a manual usb hook up sync first. This didn't work until I went into my wireless settings - Wireless Network Connection Settings/ Properties/Advanced and then turned the firewall off. Then I redid the manual sync and then the wifi sync and lo and behold it worked. I then turned my firewall back on. Then I plugged my phone into the wall outlet, locked it, waited a few minutes and then checked and it had done an auto icloud backup as well. I had previously done the initial icloud backup which took 4 hours and several manual backups which only take 2 minutes but it would not initiate the auto backup. Now all appears to be well with both wifi sync and auto backup. (for now at least):

Hey Guys, try making sure the option to sync when device is connected is checked as well as the sync over wifi option on the summary page of your iOS 5 device in iTunes. It should be the first checkbox above the sync over wifi option. Also make sure your iPhone and computer with iTunes on it are on the same network.

This didn't work until I went into my wireless settings - Wireless Network Connection Settings/ Properties/Advanced and then turned the firewall off.

Where did you find these settings? I looked under Preferences on my MacBook, and my iPhone but don't see any "Wireless Network Connection Settings / ..."

Thank you.
