-multitasking (alone that would be a huge rewrite of the OS)

Actually the iPhone already does multi-tasking, its just disabled for third party apps so it wouldn't be difficult to add.

The battery life concerns are pretty big though and I'd like to see more apps using the push notifications.

IMO the mail app needs a complete overhaul. Too many clicks to get back and forth.

Open, select mailbox, inbox, read email, back, back, back... Select mailbox...

Repeat...

Too cumbersome...

That and Calendar need fairly big overhauls, not having week-view in the calendar is a pretty big omission for business users especially.

OS 4 predictions

I suspect Apple will release 4.0 along with the 2010 iPhone.

The features of 4.0 will work on the GS but will not fullywork on the original iPhone and the 3G.

The features will be.
1) A general UI overhaul.
2) A notification-based lock-screen. See widgets.
3) Lazy quitting apps. All 3rd party apps remain in RAM until the system kicks them out. This would make switching between all apps and games very fast with no loss of data.
4) Background apps. 3rd party apps can quit to widgets. Widgets are allowed to run in background providing they meet memory and CPU budgets. Only one screenful of widgets is allowed.
5) Improvements to built-in apps. Unified inbox in mail (please!)
6) More wireless syncing. Notes etc.

Top 3 changes you'd like to see for 4G.

What are your top three things you'd like to see changed/addressed with the iPhone 4G?

I'll collate the answers as they come in.

  • Front facing camera for video calling.
  • Support for *all* GSM/UMTS frequencies, not just weird ones (iPhone 3G/S only supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and UMTS 850/1900/2100)
That's all I can think of so far.

I think that WCDMA900 support would benefit people in Europe. I'd also like to be able to install non-Apple-approved apps, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Edit: Blinkwing had the same idea. Must be a Vodafone user :p

1) New Design
2) Multitasking
3) Actual turn-by-turn voice GPS that comes FREE with the iPhone just like on the Droid

Apparently the current OS has no way to disable the use of cellular data. This option should be added.

Multi-tasking could be in. Bluetooth capability to send files like images and songs to another phone.

1) to be able to change email/mms/sms notification sounds.

2) to have more control of differ email accounts. I only want 2 of my accounts pushed and the rest pulled every hour. I'm force with having to give all account the same option.

3) FM radio w/ the dvr like features that the new nano has.

4) Simple message info on the lock screen.

5) A winterface like controlpanel.

This can all be done without upgrading hardware. I'm pretty sure numbers 3 & 4 will most likey make it.

I agree.
Everything i wanted software related has been covered by jailbreaking.
Besides that I'd say longer and better battery life, faster processor and more ram, faster hardware in general.
Front facing camera for video calls and flash for taking pics at night would be cool too.

There's really nothing they can do besides completely copy some of the better jailbreak apps like Backgrounder, Winterboard, and Lockinfo

higher resolution, flash for camera, cpu/gpu/ram bump

those are my 3 wishes, genie. make em happen!

I would like to see more 3D animations like Mobile Shell and Touch Flow 3D has. Also it would be nice if you could customize the home screen to show you number of emails and/or texts awaiting, weather and upcoming appointments at a glance.

A unibody aluminum design would be tits, although with cellular reception issues it's not likely.

i think he means the lock screen.

apple need to implement there own version of lock info. that's top of my wish list.

+1.

I'd also like some sort of improved alert system, where I can see a list of everything that's happened without interrupting whatever app i'm in.
