I’ve tried Pixel and Samsung and they’re great devices. I like Pixel more due to stock Android. I used the latter with the pixel watch, but in the end it just wasn’t as smooth or polished as Apple. It’s not that Apple is better, it’s just more polished overall for me. I want something reliable and consistent…

I’ve been back into iPhone for about the last two years. Had the original iPhone and then a 5C. Then I went pretty heavy into Android. Got frustrated after having to RMA two Pixels back to back (3a and 4a 5G). Decided to give iPhone a try back in 2021 with the iPhone 12 and I haven’t had any regrets since. I moved to a 13 pro max and I think I’m settled on this for a bit. Truthfully I find iOS a bit boring and stale but one thing I like about it, macOS and iPadOS is they’re all reliable and very few hiccups. Sure the designs Apple has come out with in the last few years have all relatively been similar but one thing I can say is their products are built well and are reliable.

Are you guys ever tempted to switch to Pixel or Samsung? If not, what makes you stick with Apple products?
I was tempted to try Samsung flip phone. Also, my parents use android, while my wife and kids are all using Mac and iPhone. What stopping me from android (and windows) is user experience, build quality, familiarity, as well as the integration (even though their price are similar with Apple’s). Other factor is I am not sure how long they will support this “new” tech like flip phone. I may be too conservative person in this area.

Android has some very well designed and built devices.
As for Flip, I would say get the coverage. My other half, and she’s not the only one I know of, has developed micro cracks in the screen in the hinge area. (Flip 3. Other was also a Flip 3. A Fold 4 too :(). She bought her Flip 3 just after launch.

Great devices. That hinge area though needs a new design IMO.

I have left and came back 2x now. I got the S22 Ultra and really loved that phone too (I still have it in the drawer). There are things I really liked about it better than the iPhone, but also things I like better on the iPhone. My issue is all of my family is on an iPhone and almost all of my friends are on iPhones. It is the ecosystem the brings me back. Being able to change and approve screen time for my son from my phone was a huge reason. Sharing videos was a pain going from android to iPhone and vice versa. I hate Apple will not allow you to add an Android phone to an existing iMessage chat with just iPhones so we had to recreate some groups I was in. Group Chat messages just were not the same after the change.

My biggest issue and complaint was dropped calls. I had a 12PM before and there were several areas that I could not get a signal where I should. My wife’s 12 Pro has the same issue but not quite as bad. The 14PM I have now works really well in areas where the signal is weaker it is as good and maybe better than the s22 ultra. I do not see me leaving again at this point.

Convenient for me. I don't have anything against Android, some great handsets out there. It just suits me to use iPhone but if I wanted to make the switch I could and would for the right reasons.

One thing I love about Apple is the screen time I use for my kids and being able to see what apps they’re using and for how long. Being able to have restrictions that I can operate from my phone is a plus. 98% of everyone I communicate with have an iPhone. I just can’t see myself using anything other than Apple.

Because I’m already on the ecosystem, and because in spite of my stern criticism of Apple’s update policy, devices on original iOS versions have astonishing and perfect longevity. Battery life doesn’t drop, performance doesn’t drop, regardless of time elapsed. It is a testament to Apple’s hardware and original software quality.

7, 8-year-old devices on original versions work as if they were new, flawlessly.

As long as Apple doesn’t go fully nuclear and starts deactivating every device on every iOS version that’s not the latest, I have no reason to switch. They did it once. The precedent exists. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again.

The most recent quarterly Android update slowed my Pixel 5 down considerably, before that it was still an excellent device. This is most definitely planned obsolesence, as there were no noteworthy features or improvements. The device is still at 88% battery health too.

Was contemplating going back to Apple for a while, particularly with my energy bills about to triple due to the expiry of an old contract. Gaming PC doesn't get used for much these days and it's hard to justify a couple hundred watts just for a pretty desktop at 280hz while I browse on Chrome.

Pixel’s get a quarterly update? Didn’t know that.

Very true. I can see, how fast/responsive the device (iPhone, iPad, Mac) with their original OS is similar (I didn't really measure it) for the old device to the newest one (as long as they use their original OS). However, this is not ideal, from compatibility perspective, as well as security aspects.

Sure, it’s not ideal, but I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. It’s the only way I can defend myself from iOS updates.

They are just too good when not updated.

Most modern phones (iPhone X and and above) are just as fast (with equivalent battery life) on future iOS releases as the released iOS version. The benefits of never updating are dwarfed by the disadvantages. However to each their own.

Should I decide to keep my devices to the very end I expect 5-7 years of updates. My max just had a new battery installed and with the new battery is equivalent to the day I bought it. Too bad it will probably reach the end of the line in September.

I see no reason to switch off Apple and on to something else. No way could the benefits overshadow the disruption.

As for boring and stale...my phone is just a tool. It doesn't need to be exciting. It just needs to be reliable and do what I need it to do, while pissing me off as little as possible. That's a fairly low standard.

My first smartphone was htc incredible back in 2010.

Battery life on that thing was horrible, picture camera and video quality wasn’t very good.

A year later I bought a used iPhone 4, then iPhone 5 on launch, iPhone SE, iPhone X, and currently using iPhone 11.

I won’t be going back to the android system because I feel like the overall experience, and quality of the device on iPhone is just better. The htc incredible felt so cheap and gave me a bad experience.

Yeah android os and now the pixel phones have come a long way and it’s probably better now.

My g/f and her nephew had a Samsung flip phone. They both dropped it and the screen broke and became blacked. So they had to get new ones. They didn’t want to get iPhone coz they are an apple and iPhone hater

I’ve dropped my iPhone so many times, and it’s still okay. Granted I use a shockproof case and cheap tempered glass screen protector.
