With the macbook's release, it seems clear that the MBP are "transition" machines

Many thought that the lower end Macbook laptops will use Core Solo chips or Core Duo's at 1.66Ghz. It now seems very possible that the Macbooks will use the Core Duo lineup for many months to come, while the pro laptops will offer the newer Merom chips coming this August. That's why they waited out with the Macbook for so long: They wanted to sell as much as possible of the MBP as to the pros.

At this point in time, if you can't really resist, it appears the best option would be to wait out the next few weeks until the Merom based MBP's.

(Just my opinion).

I would have to agree with you on that one. Even though the G4's were fairly close, at least at GHz (.25, at the end vs .16 now with intel)
 
I totally agree!
The MacBook are too close to the MacBook Pro when it comes to speed and features.

This will hopefully be fixed when Intel release their "Merom" processor. Which Apple should put in their next MacBook Pro revision, together with the Pro features they dropped on the current 15" (Dual Layer SuperDrive and FireWire 800). ;)
 
Agreed. With only the integrated graphics and screen size separating them, I would love to see Merom in MBP as soon as Intel releases it (go go dual Merom chips).

Also the new magnetic lid would be kind of a cool expansion for the MBP, although I don't know if the screen is too big to make it work properly. :confused:
 
This is surely going to be the case, the MacBook's will remain with the CoreDuo processor's for a while I think.....It'll be the MBP's that see the Merom chips probably in August...

When I think of it, it makes perfect sense that perhaps the BLACK model macbook will get the "Cheap" Merom processor when that comes out, in order to become a replacement for the 12" Powerbook as best as possible. The white models will keep the core duos.

This makes sense because the 200$ difference between the black and white models is absurd (yes i know it has 20gb more).

There's another point: The Macbooks are built by Asus (or so it is rumored). I've had the pleasure of using ASUS products for almost 7 years now. They are a truly remarkable company, with excellent RELIABLE products.

In that respect, I believe that the Macbook will have less problems that the Macbook Pro itself, which is amazing. Asus knows how to build computers!

I also agree that the MB and MBP and too close in terms of processor speed so I expect a MBP update in August and will wait till then to upgrade.

I reckon that the MBs will not get Merom until the release date for Yonah is close. It may be different and skips out Merom for Yonah.
 
Hmmm no merom in the macbooks...what the hell. Apple is in a weird place now. I want to buy but then again...it feels a bit like a "filler"

few weeks?!? oh, what a predictably sad little puppy you will be for the next few months (maybe several months), especially every tuesday morning.

i think the "if you need it, buy it. if not, don't sweat it" is the mantra to follow. there will always be next "latest and greatest" machine. you know that quad core processors are due in 2007, right. and they'll come bundled with Mac OS X 10.5 and iLife '07. 1680x1024 HD screens and Blu-Ray HD burners. Not to mention hyper drive and laser cannons.

All of you are WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!

Platform (chipset) SONOMA = Support for DOTHAN (single core old stuff) 533 bus, 900 gfx.
NAPA = support for CoreDuo (both merom and yonah) 667 bus and 950gfx

Dothan = single core sonoma based 32bit
Yonah = First gen Core Duo
Merom = second gen core duo, will be named CORE DUO 2 and will be 64 bit.

Merom and Yonah are pin compatible, unlike Dothan. Sonoma does not have yonah nor merom support. NAPA will therefore support both Merom and Yonah.
So by all means you can open up your macbook or macbook pro and drop in a merom. In theory you can have the worlds fastest mac inside a 1.099 macbook when you drop in a merom at top speed.

And you guys can only start saving to the new Macintosh Pro. :) aka the old powermac.. hehe

The poor bastard who's gonna be able to afford a QUAD EXTREME EDITION one will have to be rich.
with an OEM unit cost of aprox. 700$++ a piece for the CPU. well... do the math.
1500 in cpu costs will prolly put the QUAD EE in the pricerange of 5 grand. :)

But, why not buy the cheapest quad, if any, and swap em out? :)
They'll most likely throw out a:

Macintosh Pro Dual (Single Conroe) @ whatever defualt speed there is.
another Dual
A Quad (dual conroe)
and Quad EE (dual conroe EE) Macintosh Extreme or something :p
this is gonna be fun.

Hope we can bolt an Extreme Edition into a Single-Dual...
because of that we prolly won't see anything else than a Single Dual, a single dual extreme and a quad extreme :(

that's it bro! Mac'ers will have to get used to this. X86 gets updated WAY faster. MacBook's will see continious updates through a year. Atleast twice a year. ATLEAST!!! As for the desktops, oh good lord!!!
Let's just pray the vid cards are switchable. then atleast we can perform the updates on our own to a certian extent and keep up the lifespan of a mac desktop.

Assuming you have the skills to desolder a CPU and solder the new on in place. The MacBook (Pro)s don't have a CPU socket.

I mean where is the new fangled design that they employ Mr. Ive for? The MBP is just a tweaked 15" Powerbook.

I'd only consider it a transition machine because of all the problems it's having. As for it's looks, as someone said, why mess with perfection? I think my MBP is gorgeous and only the whine is making me send it back.

:) I'd like to see the magnetic latch that the MB got, I'd like to see user replaceable harddrive etc etc.

The alu casings are a little prone to pitting and scratching and denting, as well as poor WiFi reception (I have two 12" powerbooks). I'd like to see an attempt at improving upon that (carbon fibre? :) ).

Although I don't have near the experience CR does, I'm agreeing with him. There'll always be a new chip around the corner, something to wait for.
