At this point in time, if you can't really resist, it appears the best option would be to wait out the next few weeks until the Merom based MBP's.

Uh, you mean the "next few MONTHS" ??

Many thought that the lower end Macbook laptops will use Core Solo chips or Core Duo's at 1.66Ghz. It now seems very possible that the Macbooks will use the Core Duo lineup for many months to come, while the pro laptops will offer the newer Merom chips coming this August. That's why they waited out with the Macbook for so long: They wanted to sell as much as possible of the MBP as to the pros.

(Just my opinion).

Oh for sure, the MB PRO's will get U/G in August most likely, sporting 2/2.16/2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chips, and the MacBooks will continue to use the Yonahs until January at least. I would also expect the X1600 to become only standard on the $1999 model, and pave way for an X1800 in the top two models. Apple should get their act together and resolve their heat issues so this can happen - the X1600 was a midrange chip in January, now its a lowish mid range chip, and considering it is heavily underclocked gaming will suffer badly, especially for those richboys who are willing to pay for the best technology on the market.

All of you are WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!

Well, and so are you. You say swap out the chip in a MBP, but it's not socketed and most people aren't inclined to solder it themselves.

You also mention in your diatribe about having a Quad Conroe. Conroe doesn't support dual socket, so it's not going to be able to go into dual configurations. If Apple, and that's a BIG if, uses Conroe, it will only be in the lower end Desktops and maybe the iMacs. Woodcrest is the next processor coming out that supports dual socket. Just because it's designed for server, doen't mean it can't go into a desktop. I speculate the line up by end of year will be this:

MacBook - Yonah (Until they are discontinued)
MacBookPro - Merom
MacMini - Merom (maybe Yonah)
iMac - Conroe
Desktop (entry level) - Conroe
Desktop Pro - Woodcrest

I also don't think Apple will change chips quicker than a 6 month cycle. They won't want to risk pissing off too many of the buyers who just purchased, or create an atmosphere that makes people wait. I hope I'm wrong because I'm waiting for Merom!!

Hmmm no merom in the macbooks...what the hell. Apple is in a weird place now. I want to buy but then again...it feels a bit like a "filler"
Uh, the current model will always be a "filler" until the next processor or other new technology becomes available.

Transition, maybe true but it was the best available from Intel at the time. I have news for you, the next one will be a transition and after that another transition.
