Last time I looked, Apple provides a set of wired earbuds that plug directly into the phone. Why cant you use those if its part of the "functionality" of the phone?

Because those earbuds suck and I want to be able to use good headphones. The device plays music, the ability to plug in headphones is essential functionality. I’m not even sure why we’re discussing this, as I was simply pointing out that there’s no way in hell Apple will include very expensive and lucrative AirPods with a phone when they won’t even include a $9 single for basic headphone use.

If by "AirPods", you mean "I was expecting nice bluetooth EarPods, but all I got was air", then yes. If you literally mean "AirPods", then no.
