I have had PC's for over 10 years now and had *never* anything die, not even a HD. I don't get these stories of people having all these issues with their computers. And if an optical drive dies, you can easily replace it for not much money anyway.
And: Apple makes money on Applecare, they must. So on average it's not worth it.

Over 6 years I've lost 6 PC harddisks, 2 PSUs and one video card - I tend to hit them hard with video stuff. I for one would be seriously out of pocket if I hadn't paid for various support upgrades over the years.

With my new MP I made sure I had AppleCare budgeted for. It's not worth the hassle of NOT having it. That and a good external backup drive... just in case :)

Buy it from the apple store. Education price is $119 for the imac. If you buy it on ebay, you risk getting an older version of the included software. Any student or teacher can get the education price. Not hard to do.

uhm, you can download the latest edition of the software from Apple's website after you register AppleCare. This is true regardless of where you purchase the AppleCare.

In my experience, it's crazy to buy applecare until the end of your regular warranty. If Applecare covered everything, like a lot of other extended warranties do, then maybe, but recently I was walking down the steps from the train in NYC. There was a half step at the bottom that I missed, and which sent me sprawling to my knees, backpack hitting the ground beside me. My 10 month old powerbook G4 was in a padded case inside, and on first inspection when I got home looked fine, aside from one small dent in the corner, but when I opened it and powered it up, turns out the LCD was cracked and showed some very pretty but not very useful images over two thirds of the screen.

The next day at the big glass apple store I was told by the genius there (no really, that's what they call themselves!) that applecare doesn't cover accidents like that, and that it would cost me $1200 to repair it. Coincidentally, that is exactly how much I paid for the computer off the apple refurbished site.

At the time, I needed a computer ASAP, so I spent the money on a new Macbook instead. Later, I got a local Apple repair shop to put a used screen on it for $400... which means that the G4 works again, but I still got screwed because doing the non-warranty repair work on it means that if anything else happens to it, applecare won't cover it. This all despite that the original one year warranty doesn't even run out until the end of January.

Moral of the story: applecare sucks, and even if you do want it, don't buy it until the end of the standard one year. You never know what will happen before then.

Personally, if I buy another Mac laptop after this one, I'll get it from Best Buy or one of the other non-Apple retailers and try to buy an extended warranty through them. At least theirs usually cover accidents like that one, and often offer replacement computers while yours is getting fixed.

i feel for your situation, but you can't honestly expect apple or any company for that matter, to accept responsibility for accidents? do you think car companies do that? they accept responsibility for what they built, but it's not their fault you tripped (not your fault either btw).

the best buy route is a good one though. i think that's how BB makes their $$ b/c apple doesn't have larger margins.

hope you can sell your g4 laptop on the net or something.

Hi,

I know there will, no doubt, be posts saying 'don't buy applecare', but.....buy it.

if you buy a car, do you insure it? if you buy a house, do you have house insurance?

buy it.

i've had to use applecare 3 times over the last few years. 1 time for my ipod...actually twice so make that 4 times. both times - had a new ipod within 4 days of making the call. another time was on my g4....optical drive died. new one within 2 days.

this time, looks like my g5 dually 2.0's logic board died. sucks, but i still have applecare so everything will be taken care of without charge. it was nice peace of mind knowing it would be done without issue. i didn't have to worry about taking a 2nd mortgage out to pay for repairs. done...

and, i should have it back by Monday or Tuesday at the very, very latest...maybe friday if the shipping gods are nice to me.

so, buy it. you'll regret it if you don't and something happens. i was told by the apple dealer that anyone buying an imac or mac mini, should have it right away. i didn't want to ask why, but my feeling is that they are seeing alot of issues.

anyhoo, buy it. well worth it.

cheers,
Keebler

Good post,

unfortunately, for my scenario, I regret buying Applecare....i feel like I wasted 400 beans...but hindsite is 20/20

Not one issue in three years, never needed to call anyone thanks to members on this site....(you know who you are)....That's a lot of cash to never use.....ya ya, I know, it's insurance...and when I get the ultra slim 12 inch MBP that will be announced tomorrow I'll buy it again...maybe.
