had a battery issue with the new iPad Pro 2020 11 inch.
Apple support said send it in for replacement. Great. Had iPad shipped to them was alarmed to get an email saying they had found a hardware problem to pay or get broke iPad back.

Now I’m concerned so called straightaway.
Apparently my 2 week well looked after iPad was bent.
They sent me photos and honestly I would never have noticed having unboxed and placed it straight in a case.

In the 3 hour phone call they agreed to waive all fees which is a huge relief but CHECK THOSE SHINY NEW IPADS AS SOON AS YOU OPEN!!

I’ve included the bend pics

I have made it a habit whether sending in an item to be repaired or sending one for something like a trade-in, I always take a number of photos that shows the condition of the device from all sides and if needed that it boots up.

This is a very good idea / suggestion.

This is why I love Apple. Yes he had to deal with a three hour phone call but got a new iPad to replace an obviously damaged one. Could it have been manufactured wrong, damaged in shipping, or sat on by the owner, Apple doesn't know but they helped the customer out. I bet you try this with some other brands and they would tell you that since you had it for two weeks it wasn't like that when you bought it so you'll have to replace it yourself. I had an experience where my phone carrier messed up and canceled my AppleCare. My phone was broken and I needed a new one. After escalating it to a higher manager Apple just agreed to give me a new phone.

LOL. Omg apple, really? After they defended themselves on this issue before and said there are certain tolerances for their builds and denied anything being wrong, they go and pull this on a customer? Wow

Looks bent to me. Hold something straight (like a credit card) against the picture, and you'll see it. The whole iPad appears to bend "out" to the left of the picture.

I couldn’t as they had the iPad for repair I wasn’t even aware when I got it there was a bend as it was placed in a case as soon as unboxed

Yes they helped me out but it took me 3 hours back and forth arguing otherwise they would have happily taken a fortune for me to replace a 2 week old iPad that had very light use and also a broken battery which is why it was sent for repair in the beginning......

It’s a GREAT idea and saved me once when I was trading in a Google Pixel phone which they claimed was damaged, when I traded it in in perfect condition. Bubble Wrapped, the works.

I’m at the point now were support companies, and even high dollar eBay sales where I will literally take myself packing it up. Paranoia or Security. Both?

I agree it's annoying it took a 3 hour phone call to get it replaced. I had the same long phone call when my carrier dropped my AppleCare. My point was if it wasn't Apple you would have still had a broken tablet after that long phone call because noticing physical damage after two weeks likely wouldn't get you anywhere. Your post does make a good point to always check a product when you get it. Most people including myself don't do this.

Apple has a generally good reputation for doing things like that however I figure, based on personal experience, it is still a 50/50 chance. That their customer service is so accessible (especially via a store) makes it feel much better. I will say I do appreciate them especially after what I went through with my 12.9 IPP G2 ... took 5 replacements. Hats off to the folks in the Santa Barbara Apple Store 👍

Over the years I have had, I would say, a 50/50 with Samsung, Razer, LG, and a couple of others. Surprisingly my best experience was with a line no longer available; Google Nexus. Had an issue? Pretty much mail it in and get a replacement. Tablet and phone. Don't see that anymore. :(

I have also resolved to do this after sending a watch back for repair. I got a reply back that the glass was smashed, with photo. It was sent in the supplied Apple packaging and anyway the packaging was undamaged. I think an unpacker at Apple dropped it and covered up.

But simple photos are not enough, you could have taken them anytime. It needs to be with the return shipping label and a proof of date (but EXIF should do that) maybe even the UPS guy holding it!

Apple relented as "a special exception", after a prolonged exchange and reviewing the 19 years of purchasing and repair history on my Apple ID, as well as other things I have done for them. I would have found it very hard to continue supporting a company that was calling me a liar and a cheat.

I usually do all sides with one or more having the shipping label in the background (if supplied) and up to including the final closed shipper.

That has been my dread - claiming it was broken when received. 😣

Whenever I have to do an insurance claim or any other type that involves returning something by mail, I always take videos of the device and packaging it up as well.
