My first real big "test run" with my 6 day old 17 Pro Max Friday night. I admit I kept thinking "eh, my older 13 Pro Max is good enough..." And it is still good IMO.

But holy **, the photos - all shot in RAW - beyond exceeded my expectations! I had my old trusty Canon 5D, 85mm lens, swapping to longer 200MM lens is great, but simply grabbing this smaller device...a phone fast out of pocket and capturing shots fast and getting these results, to me that's incredible. Super wide shots from 0.5 to 8X came out far better than I expected!

Super clarity, saw no grain in the photos....OTHER than a few shots that were in 2.6, 3.4X - which becomes a digital zoom, and loses quality *Video was incredible also, I do need the small external SSD ASAP for grabbing LOG video.

Ok so when I got my iPhone 17 Pro on launch day, the camera was absolutely phenomenal, and for the next month it was amazing as well. But since then it’s just not being what it was and no matter what I do, I can’t take a photo that was anything like the quality of that first month what is going on? Has anybody else noticed this?

The view from Stanage Edge, Derbyshire (UK) taken with an iPhone Air. Unedited from the original camera app on Amber camera styles. I'm amazed at how well it dealt with the greys of the sky without washing out or becoming over exposed.

Here is a comparison shot I took with a Sony A7iii in jpeg, unedited. The image is sensor cropped due to the lens formatting:

iPhone 17 Pro. Some minor editing in the Photos app.

Not a lot of interesting things to take pictures of now that the rainy season is here. Everything is rather soggy.

I really wish that this one was better. It was a very foggy morning, and a bald eagle carrying a fish flew out of the fog right over my head. I snapped as fast as I could but only got this one shot.

need to figure out a better way to get clear pictures on my new 17 Pro but heres a couple flicks from lastnights game
Typically, the only way you're gonna achieve that is probably use a third party app where you can control the cameras better. Adjustments to the ISO is typically the best way to do it. But with third party apps, you lose your 48 megapixel resolution as it defaults to 12 after making such adjustments. Lame! Using the iPhone, you have no control on how the camera selects its shutter speed or ISO. either way, those are still some good photos of football game.

For that very reason, I have switched to the Samsung Galaxy S25 ultra where I have full control over my camera? Just like my DSLR.

I just left the AT&T store taking another look at the iPhone 17 pro Max, and I just am not happy with the cameras. For the first time since 2009, this is the only time I've not upgraded.
