I will never buy a device with that fugly notch. Complete deal-breaker for me. In fact, I don't understand the bezzeless crowd, and that they then accepted the notch compromise.

Rumors point out that there will be a notch cause iOS 12 moves the elements on the status bar to the side along with its gestures changing to be like the iPhone X.
That doesn’t mean there will be a notch though. Just means that’s the likely layout either side of the Face ID sensor.

That is one conclusion to draw. Another conclusion is that Apple is working to improve consistency across devices in displaying system information and interaction with the system. Those changes do not require a notch to exist.

The current beta of iOS 12 moves those elements and yet there's not notch on existing iPads. If those changes were notch-specific, then why would Apple make those changes for devices that have no notch? I think THAT makes consistency a more plausible conclusion that introducing a physical notch.

I would probably think about it about as much as I do with my iPhone X: never. That being said, I am not upgrading my iPad just to have Face ID. Going to try to resist the urge and stick with my current 10.5" Pro for awhile.

Good point. That sounds pretty logical.

But then why didn't they do it for the home button iPhones if they wanted to maintain consistency?

If any future iPad has a bezel notch that would be a deal breaker for me. No reason at all why an iPad should have a bezel notch. I am also not to keen on apple trying to force the iPhone X GUI on iPads. As of now, swiping up from the bottom on my iPad pro brings up both the multitasking window and control center. Why move control center to a swipe down from the top in iOS 12? iPad's are used quite differently than the iPhone.

I wouldn't like a notch on the iPad. I wouldn't like a bezel-less iPad either. I like the current form factor a lot. On a related note, the iOS 12 control center and gestures on iPad, IMO, are trying to solve a problem that wasn't there at all.

FaceID doesn't make sense to me on an iPad. For one, I will no longer be able to unlock it when it is flat on the table which is something I do regularly with the iPad and secondly I don't unlock it as many times as an iPhone.

It’s possible they’ll put a notch on the iPad because it’s just part of the new design language that immediately identifies an Apple product. Like white wired EarPods, wireless AirPods and the round TouchID button with metal accent. All these things say ‘I’m Apple’ when you see them and a notch would do too. When the X released I was curious to see notched phones out in public and knew straight away it was Apple’s new phone.

That's a bezel notch for the sake of a bezel notch. Adds no functionality that a slim bezel could not accomplish. In my opinion, the iPad is already instantly recognizable :)

Why would Apple carry over a design drawback from the phone, when they don't need to?
This isn't a device you're putting in your pocket, small bezels are perfectly fine on a tablet. People do need to hold the thing...

Answer: because they can.

Apple often does things, not for technical reasons, but for psychological reasons. They do things to show their competitors (and investors) just how much power they have over their customers and the tech media. That builds confidence in their investors, and attempts to demoralize their competition, who then follows their decisions (whether it is non-replaceable battery, removal of the headphone jack, or the notch).

Having said that, I don't think Apple will introduce a notch on the iPad unless it served some particular purpose that they can point to as a "reason" for it to exist.

I want to buy the next iteration of the Ipad Pro, as pretty weary of Google's poor support for the Pixel C.
I couldn't buy a tablet with horrendous design however. The whole point of a tablet, is the screen. Feel like it'd be excused far less in this sector than the fickle phone market.

What makes me doubtful of the notch on an iPad is the substantially larger number of ways it would interfere with apps. On the X, 90% of the time its at the top, and if not, its the left or right side in landscape. So, three cases to plan for.

For the iPad, you have not just top, left, and right, but bottom as well...and that's before considering split screen. Then you also have to plan for it being on the top left or right corners and bottom left or right corners of the app in the case of the 50/50 split, or on the top left or right side or bottom left or right side of a single app in case of 70/30. So now you have 12 different places the notch can be, and considering there are apps still not built for the 12.9" iPad or split screen, it seems like a stretch to also ask them to all consider all the places the notch could be.
