hi,

would any of you guys get a original apple tv.. I like the option of having my purchases right on the device and maybe even jailbreaking it and running plex. Seems like the original is easier to jailbreak. Thoughts ??

I have both the new ATV and a 160GB original ATV connected to my TV. I installed ATVFlash on the old ATV, which does add some functionality including the abiltiy to run XBMC and display many additional file formats.

But... I find that the Old ATV just sits there gathering dust. Eventually I'll end up unplugging it and sticking it in a closet. My reality is that I bought into the iTunes eco-system long ago, and thus I really have no need for those extra features I get with ATVFlash.

Here are some reasons that you might want to get the original ATV instead of (or in addition to to new version):
1) You have a library of content that is not in an iTunes Friendly format.
2) You don't have a computer that it is convenient to leave iTunes running on (making HomeSharing a problem) - like maybe you only have a laptop.
3) You have network issues of some sort that make streaming less that ideal.
4) You desperately want to be able to carry the ATV to a different location and plug it into a TV to play some content - but it just seems like there are better devices for that (iPod and a video out cable for example).

Edit: I should mention that I find streaming iTunes from my iMac to the new ATV is better than streaming to the old version (for files that aren't synced). Also, I'm now a Netflix junkie, which is a big part of the reason that the ATV2 wins out for me. I am expecting that an AppStore for the new ATV will be opened at some point, or at the very least that additional Apps (like maybe Hulu Plus, MLB, ABC, PBS, etc) will be added as built-in apps just like the Netflix viewer.

I have the original cracked so I can stream from an external hard drive connected to my AE. Works great for us. I also have the ATV loaded with kidflicks for my daughter. We only have laptops in my house so having to run one all the time is not practical. If my laptop is with my, that means my daughter couldn´t watch her favourite films

5) You have a 2-zone receiver that requires a separate, analog input for Zone 2.
