In a van down by the river
I would wait and get the M2 which (reportedly) will be out this summer.

I see nothing wrong with getting the M1, but then when the M2 comes out you're probably going to wish you'd waited.
Waiting for what exactly? New tech is always being released. If he waits until summer, there will be new tech right behind. Then what? Buy again?

I have an early 2017 Mac Book Air, and it is working fine. It is not my main Mac (I also have a late 2018 Mac Mini), but I do use it every now and then. Also, use it for checking EMails, browsing the web with Brave, and doing SuperDuper! backups.

The M1 certainly sounds impressive, and would, it seems, satisfy my need for speed. But for now, there are still a good number of third party applications that are not compatible with the M1. Given that I only use third party applications, that's a huge issue for me. But the M1 is impressive, I'll say that!

Also, I've had good luck with selling items on craig's list. Yeah, one will get some flakes, but I also state in the ad that I will accept offer from local buyers only, and cash only.

I agree, and there is a realistic chance that the next generation comes with a new design.

I sold a maxed out MacBook Pro 16 inch for an M1. I hated that machine, and I mean hate. Too big, too heavy, too slow, and ran too hot. I didn’t buy my Intel MBP 16” until March, so I only had that doorstop for nine months.

I have a weird history of repeating things.

Got the 12" rMB 2015 in space grey. Loved the compact form factor and fanless-ness, got tired of Core-M performance quick

got an i5 13" No Touch Bar 2016 in silver. Loved it with much more overhead... but missed the wedge form factor. And wanted the classic look. selling the 12" covered it and then some,

Got a 2020 13" i5 MBA at a great price in the spring, space grey to switch it up and the 'magic' keyboard. Tired of the color ,got the silver M1 and trading my i5 which will pay for most of this new one... hope to keep THIS machine a few years like my 2016 NTB.

Silver is the choice for me, I always long for it even when I had both colors in house. The space grey isn't bad, but I will return when space grey is like the black 13" polycarbonate MacBooks

I had a May 2020 MBA that I replaced in December 2020. Well worth it in response time (and fun). Sold the other one quickly and, yes, lost some asset value, but hey, why not. Especially as both units are on a 24 month interest free purchase basis. So no real cash outlay until after 11 months or so.
I did the same! I hated the 2020 MBA, the fan would go off like a jet engine during zoom calls and that is all seem to be doing now. Absolutely no regrets - I did get the 16GB/256GB one though.

Same for me. Probably not with the same white hot hatred level, but working on the M1 has definitely highlighted the level of compromise I was putting up with on the 16”.

For example, I was running with Turbo Boost disabled on the 16 for the majority of the time just to keep the fans manageable. The M1 is roughly on par with the 16” benchmark-wise, but it DESTROYS it with turbo off, and with not a hint of fan noise.

It’s quite amazing. Last night I played World of Warcraft with my granddaughter for two hours. The machine never went above 58°C and the fan never came on. On the 16, it would be running in the high 70s with spikes into the mid 80s and the case would be hot to the touch. And, the M1 ran the game more smoothly. Right there illustrates the efficiency of these new machines. Apple really knocked it out of the park on this one.

I bought the M1 Mac mini 16gb just to test it.
It is a big step forward.
But it can not replace, in my use case, a 32gb Macbook pro i9 or the 2018 i7 mac mini completely.
To replace the Macbook pro I will wait for a 32 gb Mx version to be able to run more then one VM comfortably.
Parallels for arm is very promising.

In case of the i5 intel Macbook pro with 16 gb ram or less it is no question - the M1 is the way to go.

Just do it. You currently have a computer that in a year will be worth half what you can get for it now. And you will have a brand new machine that will last a very long time and not have that annoying fan issue.
