I have had an 11” 2020 iPad Pro since it launched and it is still incredibly smooth. Handles everything with absolute ease, I even had it replaced via AppleCare around 2022, so this one is technically only two years old. But performance-wise is perfect. Beast of a device.

I want the new OLED model, and the bigger screen. But I cannot bring myself to get it. iPads are such a ridiculous luxury I just can’t do it. While I do use it for my business it is not a mission critical device by any means. So I could absolutely justify it and twist it so it feels semi-needed. But it isn’t lol.

That is all. Just lamenting how lucky we are to be in this modern well off civilization. Wanting something just to want it and feeling guilty. Ugh

Haha, I'm right there with you! I have a 2018 11" iPad Pro and have been eyeing the new oled one in the larger size but can't seem to pull the trigger because the 2018 does everything I need it to do. No matter how much I say it's dumb to want something that won't do anything differently, I can't seem to stop wanting it.

I know the feeling. I use 2020 iPad Pro in my work and cannot justify a switch. It does what it is supposed to do perfectly, but I still want the newest and shiniest. At the same time, I am a little tired of the constant upgrading pressure.

I bought my wife an Air from Amazon in February I think, to replace her battery gone iPad Pro 10.5" (Apple in australia refuse to replace the battery). Then I realised a much better iPad was coming, so i returned the sealed box to Amazon, we never even opened the courier box.

Now the iPad is here and my wife says - save the money. This thing does what she wants. I said drop the PC and do your word processing on the iPad, it has a good keyboard. But M$ Office is very different and inferior on the iPad. She has an HP Elitebook 360 which has been excellent - its gone through two batteries, but they are easy to replace. As is RAM and hard drives. It even has Thunderbolt 3.

She often drops the iPad and that worries me. I wish they'd make a cover from the factory, that was light and protects the iPad from damage when its dropped from say 4 feet.

The 13" does look great but when one adds a keyboard and a cover, it gets heavy. And many say weight makes the 11" the better tool.

And then, Apple's pricing is not cheap for something that is very limited for most users. Give a proper Office app and a similar file saving structure to a Mac or a PC, and it would be a much more useful tool. Not yet sadly. Its great for internet browsing though. How much should we pay for doing that in marginally greater speed and better colour?

50% of my decision to go with the 11” M4 was the $400 CAD delta to the 13” model. It was a nearly visceral reaction to that price for 2” of real estate…

Doesn’t bode well for the next XDR display from Apple… for me 😅

I went with the 13" Pro + MKB and love it. Gave the 2021 12.9 and its MKB to my wife to replace her old Air 2. We're both very happy.

I believe you have a crystal clear view on your situation.

I did buy the m4 pro 13 with the magic keyboard. I ended up selling it weeks later. It's a great device but, after a few hours with it, it just became another tablet for me...

I succumb to this with Apple products from time to time. My sincere advice is to consider the needs. Figure that a new feature that you want enough may be a viable enough reason to replace what you currently have. Though, as having wielded multiple iPads, I believe there will always be one that you'll lean on more and that it often renders the secondary ones superfluous. Plus, it's not like Apple provides wildly different experiences to different models of iPads. They're all still iPads and they all still run iPadOS.

Nah price is nuts, got a 13" 16/512 M3 MBA for $550AUD less than a 13" 512 M4 pro, lol.

Yeah, the prices are nuts for something that is pretty much a glorified big iPhone lol

I still have a 2020 iPad Pro 11" that is going strong. When the time comes to replace it I won't be paying what they're asking for these Pros. I'll just get an MacBook Air or something at that point.

I don’t understand people thinking an iPad is a MacBook. It isn’t. It so much more, in many ways. And less in others.

The price for my iPad is nuts indeed, but it’s more powerful than a MacBook Air. And it does a lot of things a macbook can’t: you can’t write with a pencil on a macbook (well, not much), it doesn’t have 5G, it doesn’t have portrait, doesn’t have a good camera to make pictures, it can’t scan pages, doesn’t have a OLED display.
The iPad is much more portable, can be attached to several different excellent keyboard covers, can be connected to external displays and so on.

Where it doesn’t shine is working like an old school laptop or desktop. The file handling isn’t for handling or renaming large amounts of files, writing software isn’t easy and sometimes even not possible. Microsoft has crippled Office a great deal, but it does so on Android and iOS as well. The full adobe suit isn’t available, just a dumbed down version.
Then again, writing a large report is very well possible, with footnotes, pictures etc. And most of the software is good enough for 95% of the people’s private work, and possibly 50% of professional work.

Have had iPads since day 1 and most.
Never used a pencil, no keyboard I have tried is comfortable on the lap, never scanned, have a 15 max for photos never used iPad.
5g is redundant now with hot spot so easy and the extra costs, no free data sims anymore, $25AUD a month here, or have to have a higher phone plan to get one for $10.
M3 air can run more screens with Mac OS, and not just a blown up iPad os.

I had a similar predicament and ended up buying a used M1 Pro 256gb with Combo Touch case for less than half the cost of the M4 iPad.

Sure it’s not quite as nice, but it’s still fantastic and can do everything an M4 model can (for now at least).

It seems a lot of people justify their new apple purchase by donating their current device to a family member or friend.
