1080p & the A5 chip

Unless i get an iPad

I don't see 1080P as an important upgrade at all. Most Americans just barely have a fast enough connection to stream the current "HD" content available on the ATV. I certainly don't want to deal with storing and Backing Up 1080P content.

An app store would be a much more appealing upgrade.

I would love 1080p and a bit faster processor. Additionally if they could revamp the interface a bit it would be a bit better. Searching is hard.

i would agree with this, i have zero 1080 content to play on it.

What i would like are Apps to stream more content. Heard a news blurb today about Apple buying Hulu, now this would be a good thing for the ATV

Hulu would be good for :apple:TV if Apple were to get rid of the commercials. iTunes and Netflix have spoiled me! I think Apple might be interested in Hulu for the streaming rights more than the service itself - at least that's my hope!

1080p is an important feature, even if broadband can't support it. The AppleTV is not only about streaming stuff from the internet, it's also about streaming content from your computer. There are many models of HD camcorders out there that produce 1080p video . There is no reason you should have to downgrade the quality of your home videos because the hardware can't support it.

There is just no good reason why the AppleTV shouldn't be able to handle 1080p.

That being said, I think the next version needs to also up the flash memory and they need to open it up for 3rd party apps. So, add 1080p, go to 32 GB flash and open an App Store for the AppleTV and I will be very happy.

To be ecstatic, they would need to add analog audio out (for those of us with multiple zone setups), but I would be pretty surprised if that happened. I'd also love for them to enable the USB port for local storage. I still would rather keep my music and photos, plus my home videos, on the AppleTV (or a connected HD), like I do with my ATV1.

As long as it results in a App to stream on the ATV, i am happy.

I would gladely sacrifice 1080P for just a little more content.

I'd be happy if they had my shows show up as ... show name, then all the seasons. Not every season of every show in the upper level directory. I hate going through everything to get to white collar. Or at least give me the option to change it to that. Anything else is icing.

And yes, I did submit it as feedback (a few times).

Yes would be nice if this was done natively, but i achieve this by using a playlist folder for each show, then a smart playlist inside for each season.

If apple buys hulu

You think there going to keep that cheap price of $8 a month?

Apples current itunes shows are 0.99 each episode

I think the end game for them is a monthly streaming service to compete against Netflix.

As far as price, i would expect it to fall out somewhere between $9.99 and $14.99

Apps apps apps

For me 1080p is not a big deal, I have no content at that res and most 720p stuff looks very good on my 46" tv, way better than most HD content coming through XFinity digital cable. The off-air HD is the only thing that beats it.

What I REALY, REALY want is app support. And specifically, the most useful app for me would be....iTunes! That's right, let that little black puck be my home sharing iTunes server (and obviously it's own server too). Let it access the content from a local usb drive, network share or hell, I'd even buy a time capsule if I had too....

Great thing is, they could *easily* roll this out for the current get machine.

I've submitted a suggestion to Apple about this ages ago, and I suspect they thought about it long before I did.

I'm not implying that Apple will or won't buy Hulu (personally, my money is on them not buying). Apple's business model for the aTV isn't about selling or renting content. It's about selling aTV's. Adding Hulu to the aTV, along with Netflix, MLB, NBA, etc, would be additional reasons for folks to buy the aTV.

Apple could care less about Hulu competing with the 99 cent rentals. Having both would suit Apple just fine since it would cover more demographics. Especially since neither Hulu, nor the 99 cent rentals provide Apple any iTunes ecosystem benefits.

ABSOLUTELY! It should have been there years ago.

For my own situation, I've got many years of 1080HD video shot with consumer HD camcorders begging for that last link in the chain between iTunes and 1080HDTV's (that I've owned for many more years). It's been frustrating that Apple gave us the tools as early as 2006 to import, edit & render 1080HD video (iMovie 06), store and play it (iTunes & Quicktime) and we've had personal equipment like 1080-capable camcorders and TVs for even longer. It would be great to finally be able to access this content as easy as we can via :apple:TV without the resolution downgrades.

Frankly, I could care less about whether there is ever 1080 content in the iTunes store. If it arrives, great! If it doesn't, I'd still love to have a 1080 :apple:TV. Better hardware will play 720p and lessor software to it's max. Weaker hardware can't do the same for 1080p software.

There's likely no need for a new processor--Using XBMC the ATV2 does just fine decoding h264 1080p material at the bitrates Apple is likely to offer through the iTunes store. The issue is getting it to output 1080p to a display. No one seems to know if this is a hardware or a software issue--hoping it's the latter and we get 1080p on current ATV2 with iOS 5...

I hope you are right. I've generally heard that while the existing hardware can decode 1080p, the playback of some of that will stutter. If true, it could mean that the hardware is just barely able to do the task... and not completely. Or it could mean that the playback code needs further optimization.

I have heard (but you're right that no one seems to know for certain) that the output gate is hardware (limited to 720p) and can't be changed. As such, my guess is that we will need new hardware. If so, I hope that Apple just finally hits a home run with 1080p hardware capable enough to handle max 1080p standards instead of some minimal incarnation. I'd love to see enough horses to deal with 1080p/60fps with the theoretical max of the AVC standard (anything BD could handle, so could Apple's answer to the "bag of hurt").

Now before this yields 50 posts against 1080p/60fps/max AVC because of "bandwidth is too limited", "storage", "the chart", etc, I'd clarify that giving us much more robust hardware than what current software can handle is doing nothing different than Apple does in just about every other computing platform they produce. For example, 4-core processors are rarely taxed by the software they run but it's nice that they can handle the load when the software gets around to catching up. I hope this next :apple:TV is like that: maxed so that we can throw ANY 1080p content at it and it can handle it without issue; however, until then, its better hardware will be able to fully deal with lighter & thinner software such as the SD & 720p media available now. If Apple doesn't believe in the "bag of hurt," it would be great to offer a toe-to-toe alternative on the most mainstream benefits like picture & sound. I hope they get it thoroughly right this time.

We've got camcorders that can shoot 1080p/60fps. We've got Apple software that can process it. We've got Apple software that can store the renders. How about an :apple:TV that can push it from iTunes to the HDTV? (and not :apple:TV4 or 5)

YES, 1000 times YES!!

I've been saying this for a while too. I've got an Airport Extreme and a hard drive with all my iTunes media on it, including the database. I never even use iTunes on the computer, with the exception of importing data and syncing my devices. All of the playing of media I do is done on the ATV or via the Remote app on my iPhone/iPad. Why shouldn't I be able to hook the hard drive up to the APE, point the AppleTV to it and pull directly from there so I don't have to keep a computer on all the time?

I have the media sources I want. Regular Hulu might be nice, because I am not paying a subscription AND having ads on top of that. (But I realize that's not how Hulu operates. I don't think any device currently shipping has anything but Hulu Plus).

So, for me, the hardware to handle 1080p (the A5 or equivalent) AND content on the store and Netflix) to show it off would be enough.

That way I can retire my Apple TV 2 to the 720p bedroom tv and get the new one for the 50" plasma in the main room.

AppleTV 3

I like the Apple TV2 and it works fine. I miss not having a HD to store my purchased media. I could use a 1-2 TB HD for video and music that hooks up to the AppleTV 2 or 3 via USB2 or 3. I would like to transmit my media to any AppleTV in my house.

I would like to see other internet media and NFL TV.

I think the future of streaming media is going to be a paid service that is partially subsidized by commercials. It does not bother me, for years I paid for cable service that also came with commercials. I think the draw is going to be the ability to pick and pay for only the content you want. There is a tipping point for me, I do not mind a couple of commercials that play before the show starts, but then get to watch the show uninterrupted.
