if you need it, want it, desire it.. buy it! it pretty much have everything new in it.. and in a year some new cpu will arrive and apple will scream +50% performance (which means about +5%) so, buy it now! It was only released under a month ago, and Apple usually leaves 8 months give or take before releasing new ones..

And for SSD, they are fast, but really, who wants to go back to the time when we all had 32 gig drives? even 64? Do a bootcamp partition, install osx and software and you are left with what? barely enough for your swap file =)

Waited and waited for mine. I'm sure 10.5 will come out in October but a speed increase??
Now my MBP is taunting me with "delivered." I have 4 more hours before I go home. AHHHH!!!

Can anyone speculate what might go in the next update, if it were to come before Penryn?

I can't really think of anything aside from a larger HDD. The GPU just had a update, the screen has, the processor so even if there were a refresh in October/November there's not much that can be improved on.

The MB's have more 'capacity' for an update late on in the year.

There is a possibility that there will be processor (and maybe HDD) upgrades soon, before or along with Leopard.

http://laptoping.com/intel-mobile-la...mmer-2007.html

"In the mainstream class, the company will release the Core 2 Duo T7250 with 2GHz clock speed, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache, and a $209 price tag, as well as T7800 at 2.6GHz, featuring 800MHz FSB and 4MB L2 cache."

The Core 2 Duo will be up to 2.6GHz by the end of July. I'm not expecting a MBP Core 2 Extreme, but I think it's reasonable to expect a speedbump in the MBP's Core 2 Duo up to the 2.6GHz. Perhaps the low end will be the current 2.4 and the high ends will get the 2.6.

There's also a lot of time between now and October, when Leopard comes out. I am betting on Apple giving the MBPs (and their entire line, frankly) some speed bumps around then.

I posted the MacBook Pro's update history in another thread recently:

- February 14, 2006: Original MBP 1.83-2.0GHz Core Duo
- May 16, 2006: Speedbump to 2.0-2.16GHz Core Duo
- October 24, 2006: Upgrade to 2.16-2.33 Core 2 Duo, Radeon X1600 is now clocked to 450MHz (before it was underclocked to 418.5MHz)
- June 5, 2007: Upgrade to 2.2-2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) and Geforce 8600M

As you can see they were a couple months apart for a little while. I have a feeling Apple will pick us back up and at least up the processor and HD (160GB? Give us more, Apple) a little bit, maybe increase the clock speed or RAM on the currently underclocked, less RAM-than-stock 8600GT. (It should come in 256 and 512MB varieties).

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but wasn't the reason for the Oct. '06 bump more of a result of the transition from the CoreDuo to the Core2Duo chips? If so, then I'd think of the Oct '06 as more of an anomaly rather than an indication of potential future refresh dates.

It's possible, but to me it seems logical for Apple to bump their machines to coincide with Leopard's release, doesn't it?

Does anyone agree with me on this one?

Again, I should think that Apple have sorted out many of the problems with the MBP by now. This includes the dodgy screens, and the overloaded thermal paste. I should expect that if you were to order now, that the computer you get in a week's time will be pretty much perfect. If it's not, you send it back. It has already been stated that MBPs that can push their CPU temps up around 90˚C can be gotten replaced.

So what are the commands to push both cores of your CPU to the max?
yes/dev/null or something?

Is there one for the GPU, or is it best to play like 10 quicktime movies, or a game?

And for the terminal stuff, to get it to stop, do you just quit XTerm?

And I still don't think the MBPs will get any kind of update until at least early next year. Maybe MWSF. Santa Rosa MBs for school buying season, MBPs when Penryn is released. It will be interesting to see if the MB ends up getting a Penryn processor early next year or not. I would guess yes.

I am interested in purchasing my first Mac. The only thing I am worried about is if I buy a MBP 15" 2.2Ghz right now, will it easily power Leopard in October? Or will I have to upgrade in order to run Leopard well?

Thank you in advance

Another question

Also, do you think that the Mbp that will be released with Leopard will be the current price? Do you think they will raise the price?

Thank you in advance

This is not Microsoft you are talking about, but Apple. Leopard is designed to work on much older computers than a brand new MBP - probably computers four years old. No worries - go ahead and buy the MBP. Each version of OS X released has only become faster and snappier - unlike Windows where it becomes more bloated.

G4 processors which were released years ago should be able to power Leopard!
You won't suffer a noticeable performance hit and apparently some facilities run even faster. It's not terribly demanding and your laptop should be able to run the next few releases of OS X.

you can definitely go ahead and buy one now, if you have issues you can always return it. there seems to be less issues (if any) than there was when it was released. i personally am waiting for a compact macbook pro, i was abou to order a 15in mbp today but i read on the front page where rumors are surfacing again about a subcompact. i took that as a sign :p to not order and wait for that smaller mbp. hopefully it drops before the back to school promo ends cause i really could use a new mac.

No.

I will buy when AAPL shares drop to $1, and the company looks to be going under imminently. In fact I will buy just one day before Apple cease operations. Not going to risk having Apple release a model after I buy you know.

The 15/17" MBP hardware and price are unlikely to change much between now and Leopard & new iLife's release. If the value you get out of having the laptop for 3-4 months is worth more than $200 in software upgrades and the pain of upgrading an OS, then go for it.

Personally I'm waiting to see the new iMac before I decide to get a MBP+ACD, or a 24" iMac & pick up a used 12" iBook or PB G4 for the road.

Matte vs Glossy decision? I had doubts too, but once I saw the two side by side, it was no question for me - Matte is the way to go.
Me too. Looking into the glossy screen was like an old dish washing detergent commercial: "Look Ma, I can see myself!" :)

Anyway, I'm personally gonna try to hold off until October if I can. We'll see...

planning to buy a mb, i might just wait until october, but will there still be student discount in October, does it run throughout the year?

the ipod promo is going to be discontinued in sept. so people who are waiting for oct. updates will no longer be able to use that promo. however you can get student discounts. apple has been having that since forever.

Buy now. It was just updated, it's not going to be updated again by October. Tiger is a great OS and I'm holding off until Leopard is thoroughly tested before upgrading --just what I always do.

The bleeding edge pays the most and suffers the most.

2 weeks ago I bought a MBP 15 2.1 for $1600 from Apple's refurb page.
A. As a late 2006 model the bugs were fixed and tested.
B. 10.4.8 is stable; don't upgrade unless you need the fix is the tried
and true UNIX dogma.
C. Good price and 1 year warranty.
D. Yeah, I'll wait until 10.5.2 to upgrade.
E. My MBP has worked perfectly, even the Linksys wireless !!

Buy , enjoy.

only a few screens have problems. I just got a 2.4GHz 15" with 4GB RAM and its awesome. I have had no problems.

if u keep waiting, then there will always be something new out.

woah , the mbps just got major updates. it would be foolish to wait now, even for leopard. leopard will be cheap w/ student discount...

Just received 17' 2.4 MacBook Pro

Just received our new MBP. Optical drive started making very funny noise and Apple wanted us to send it in for a replacement. Before we could do that it just "went black" while on the web. Tried restarting, made it to the Apple screen and then it went black again. Quality of computer seemed poorer than our PowerBook G4. Needless to say, we are asking for a refund. Really need our laptop, but very upsetting to pay $3500 for something that doesn't work. Apple won't admit they are having problems with these - and while we may have been "unlucky"- shouldn't this problem have been checked and found BEFORE they shipped it?? Be careful. Will wait until the "bugs are worked out" before ordering again. We've owned Macs for over 20 years, and this has never happened. We expected better.
