Basically like a huge gaming handheld form factor? Button-only controls seem like they would really limit the iPad’s usefulness. Things like manipulating windows and editing text seem like they would be more difficult. And how would you type? Who would this device be for?

I don't understand how such a device could even exist. It wouldn't be an iPad at all, there is no iOS without touch, that's simply absurd. Keyboard and mouse support is still rudimentary at its worst. The only potential market for such a product would be for POS systems or something that only uses external devices through the iPad, but it is such a niche market that there is simply no need for this. For the POS folks there's already ways to disable touch on an iPad, which will suit their needs just fine... No need for a new SKU. None.

I think you need to upgrade to deep 7 at least, deep 10 is available on most devices too and makes the touchscreen a lot better. Check it out.

I’m surprised Apple hasn’t released one yet. Yes a non touch iPad. How do you use it? Buttons on the sides and on the back. So would you buy one? I believe there’s a market for it.
That does not sound like a very Apple product at all. I'm not surprised they have not developed such a device.

The kind of physical interface you describe sounds more akin to something that Sony and Nintendo would do, not Apple.

Keyboard and mouse support is rudimentary? I don't know about mouse, but keyboard and trackpad support on the iPad is quite effective at this point.

That is a horrible idea. iPadOS is built for touch. Mice on iPadOS emulate touch instead of behaving like a desktop cursor, and the majority of the apps for iPad are made for touch, not keyboard and mice. Take the touchscreen away and the majority of the tablet's functionality is lost.

If you want a thin and light computer without a touch screen the Macbook Air is down the hall to the left

Mouse support is mostly what I refer to, keyboard is a fairly simple one. I admit I haven't used a mouse with an iPad in a while, since the first gen Magic Mouse that I keep around doesn't work properly with the iPad.

Mostly problem with mouse is supporting a variety of third party options at this point because if they were to sell to this mythical POS market they'd need some more product support.

I'm using a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse with my M1 12.9 and it works quite well.

I'd have tried using my Logitechs with the iPad, but mine are USB dongle only unfortunately. Magic Mouse 1 doesn't have scrolling or gestures at all on the iPad, so I've been unable to form a better opinion of it yet.

Nope! Defeats the mission statement of an iPad. Buying a non-touch iPad would require a keyboard and mouse for input..which would make it, uummm, it’s on the tip of my tongue, uuuhhh, - can I phone a friend? - a laptop!

Yes, I have a first gen Magic Mouse too and in the past, iPad OS supported that mouse but it doesn't any more.

I assume the latest mice would work on the iPadOS just fine. The trackpad option works really well and because of that, I would assume that almost any new generation mouse would work fine since the UI issue (the pointer issue) is now largely resolved. It is curious why the first gen Magic Mouse doesn't work with the iPad. I don't know why that would be; what technical limitations are there really?
