MacTop... kinda silly i know but...

Just take your normal computer name (Desktop, notebook) and replace the first syllable with 'Mac'. Think about MacBook = Notebook. Macbook Pro = Notebook Pro.

And dont ask me where 'Mac Pro' came from.

Keep iMac, if you said "I own a Mac" I wouldn't know if you have an iMac or just a Macintosh Computer.

I really hope they keep the iMac name. If they just called it"Mac", kevin-rivers concluded the result.

"So, I just got a Mac today."

"Awww, extreme, which one?"

"The Mac...."

I can see no reason in changing the name, it already contains "Mac", and is a well known brand. If they rename the PowerMac, I will also do some killing sprees. Mac Pro sounds s*ck. Especially if it's iMac Pro:p "Power" doesn't go with PowerPC. It is true that the first PowerMac was called "Power Macintosh 6100", and was the first computer to run PowerPC, but the PowerBooks were named this far before PowerPC, and they were only renamed because it lacked "Mac". BTW, I just found out. A Macintosh is also a raincoat.:p

I'd vote yes, because I like the iMac name, but I can't because I won't shoot myself if they change it... Did I mention that I don't like polls that puts words in my mouth.

The

"I bought a Mac today."
"Which one?"
"The Mac..."

point is a good one. That could cause lots of confusion. :p

They will never do it. It's like 9 years of branding down the tube if they do.

They did that with the PowerBook, so I'd never say never.

But I hope they don't drop the name personally. iMac has become synonymous with the all-in-one Apple desktop. While the 'i' may have initally stood for 'internet,' one could argue that the 'i' now stands for 'integrated' (as in all-in-one).

Then i guess the iPod will be............

MacPod

YUCK!
Considering the iPod is what virtually saved Apple (among other things but the iPod and the ITMS are the benefactors) and that iPod has replaced the name MP3 Player (i.e. Kleenex to facial tissue), I highly doubt they will rename it.

You could argue that they wouldn't have changed the name iMac at Macworld 2006 because it would be calling the same model a new name.

The MacBook and iMac are clearly meant for similar users and they're the "consumer" line of computers, so why not align the names.

Actually, The Mac mini is more of the consumer desktop. I think iMac is more "prosumer", not consumer.

Yes, I would care.

To what? MacTop vs. MacBook and MacTop Pro vs. MacBook Pro? Gimme a break.

If they rename iMac, they should probably rename iPod, the whole iLife-suite (including iTunes), iCeo, iGary, iWonderhowlongthislistkeepsgoingon...

Referring to the original '98 keynote where Jobs revealed the first iMac:
iMac - The excitement of the internet. The simplicity of the Macintosh.
The i means: internet, individual, instruct, inform, inspire.

I can't see how any of that, along with the eight years of brand building, would have become redundant.

There's no reason to change iMac, it already has mac in it. Not to mention, what would you change it to, just mac by itself? Makes no sense.

And if they were going to change it, they would have done it at the intel transition like all other models.

I don't know why this is even being discussed, there's ZERO evidence that would suggest apple getting rid of the iMac name.

I wouldn't rule out a revision to the iMac, a rename, or a simple drop of the iMac line. The model is almost 2 years old so there's a chance that Apple may introuduce a new model at WWDC in August.

This would be especially true if the Mac Pro (PowerMac replacement) isn't announced at WWDC. We'll just have to wait and see.

It would be so confusing if Apple renamed it just plain "mac".

If somebody asks you what computer you own, you reply a mac. Then they ask oh, cool, but which mac? The mac mac? Yes, the Apple mac mac. etc, etc.

Or something like that:D

Do you mean by to the name becasue to get rid of the imac would mean to get rid of the computer that helped keep the company floating, Steve will never get rid of the imac.... Ever.... Maybe the name but never the computer.

I also don't care ... I thought the poll would be about getting rid of the *product* ... and I think that's an awful idea. Because I think the iMac is the most gorgeous thing Apple makes right now, personally. I think the "iMac" name is cute, but as long as it's something that is short, to the point, and rolls off the tongue nicely, I don't care what it's called. :)

perfect new name for imac

i think they should do away with "imac",
but not change it to "mac" because that is too generic.
but what about F***ing mac?

"i'm getting a mac"

"cool. what kind?"

"a F***ing mac""

just think about the marketing possibilities.

"sick of your PC? get a F***ing mac!"
