How many of you would like to see apple change the 12.9 ipad pro from a 4:3 ratio to a 16:9 ratio ?

I hope not as I own a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ (16:10) and you don’t want a tablet with a 16:9 aspect ratio. They are good for watching movies but terrible for everything else. A tablet that size would be incredibly wide and rather thin in portrait mode. It’s not the best for using a web browser.

The iPad’s have traditionally been 4:3 and that makes them unique.

I remember seeing an interview shortly after the iPad was released, I think it was with Jony Ive.
Seems like an incredible amount of research went into the ratio, and many were considered. The 4:3 was the clear winner and there were some very good explanations as to why (but I've forgotten them! :) )

In answer to your question though, I would not like to see it change to 16:9 as it would not be as useful and probably would not buy one.

I’n not a fan either. It would be better for (modern day) movies and shows but pretty much worst for everything else.

It makes web browsing a worse experience and the iPad loses much of it’s Portrait / landscape use in my view

Yep I own a Samsung galaxy tab as well. The only thing I use it for is watching movies. In fact it’s collecting dust right now because of that reason.

I wouldn’t buy an iPad Pro this big with a 16:9 ratio either. Movie watching is about the only use case where that would be an advantage in my opinion but one could then just buy a Samsung. I use my iPads for many other tasks and I like portrait mode as well - hence I like them as close to an A4 sheet of paper as possible.

I see a lot of people here would not like a wider ratio for the 12.9

But feel it kind of strange no one seems to complain about the wider ratio on the 11" air/pro and new 8.3 mini

4:3 is in between US Letter and A4. The Pro 11, Air 4 and mini 6 are closer to A4 aspect ratio. They’re still quite a bit more squarish compared to 16:9.

Mind, I do find the mini 6 feels quite squished in landscape and there have been complaints about the new AR in the mini threads. However, the mini form factor lends itself to portrait mode and small size and light weight makes it feel well balanced. I’ve used 16:9 and 16:10 Android tablets and while the AR is great for 7-8”, I’ve found 10”+ tablets felt pretty off balance.

I tend to use my tablets as tablets and the onscreen keyboard on 16:9/10 tablets blocks majority of the content on screen. Situation’s much better on 4:3.

the new mini screen has an aspect ratio of 3:2, it’s the furthest from a 16:9 aspect ratio

No! Good lord

Why do people want 16:9 devices for anything other than watching video content?
It's an aspect ratio that sucks otherwise..

Almost all PC computer monitors are 16:9 or 16:10 or wider these days

My 35" UW monitor is really great for having multi tabs open at the same time.i would now hate to use a 4:3 ratio for this

Yes, but are you grabbing the PC monitor with your hands and interacting with it through touch. Think about using a 16:9 device in landscape and the touch keyboard comes up. It is kind of like your phone in landscape mode. It is easier to type, sure, but you can't really see anything else on the screen.

On the contrary; I would like to see them change the 11" Pro back to a 4:3 ratio. I found the wide aspect ratio not very space efficient for many of my apps, and ended up going back to a 10.5" Pro.

A Pro iPad should be focused on productivity first, and media consumption second. The 16:9 ratio is for media consumption.

Not sure about that as the 12.9 pro has by far the best speakers & screen (HDR) for Media Consumption
If i wanted a device for productivity first it be a Macbook pro

Or like i use at my work place & home for productivity a desktop PC computer

iPads are multipurpose tablets first and foremost. Indeed, most people I know don't use keyboards with their iPads (basic, Air or Pro). Hence, design and UI should take this first into consideration.

16:10 I believe. They also cannot be used in portrait mode so a different aspect ratio makes sense here.

Yep and the physical keyboard is always attached. No onscreen keyboard to block the display.

Mind, browsing websites fullscreen on my MBA (and pretty much any 1080p or higher notebook/monitor), I often just get large blank margins on the left and right.

The 11" iPad aspect ratio is 1.43, and the Mini 6 is 1.52, compared to the original 1.33.

I don't like the Mini 6 aspect ratio, and the 11" aspect ratio is OK - it seems an OK compromise, giving slightly wider space for movies, and is not weird when in portrait. But I still like the original 1.33 the best.

I would hate a 16:9 ratio (1.78), hard pass.
