Yeah its a tough position, I think it all depends on the person, if you truly think it would help them to wait for the new one, for example you hear about their needs, or it the person seems on the edge of buying it but isnt sure. I know for one I would be happy if I didnt know some information and someone informed me before a purchase

I would probably act similarly to OP. The OP felt that the family wasn't super techy, so they wouldn't mind about performance specs as much. However, if it were someone more tech savvy, I would let them know the the airs should be getting a performance bump around the same time that lion comes out. I would also make clear that these are just rumors, but the rumors have some validity because the airs are due for a refresh.

Honestly, most people do not care. Super techy people and gadget nerds are a small set of the population. Apple needs to get rid as much of the inventory out as possible before they put out the new toys so let those that don't care pick them all up so the new refreshes can some sooner.

Besides, if new Airs come out next week and this family DOES care, they can always exchange it.

As for Apple employees giving out bad info. Basically if you're an Apple employee you are not allowed to acknowledge any unreleased products until the day of release - unless you want to be fired.
