Well I still like my 9.7 Pro, but yeah the best advice was to wait for the release/announcement of the new models.
Comparing the new Air to the 10.5 Pro, I'd go for the Pro. The A12 does perform somewhat better than the A10X (15-20%ish going by Geekbench scores of iPP 2017 vs XS), but the 10.5 Pro does have the promotion screen and quad speakers. It also for sure has 4GB of RAM, while the Air is still a mystery. As long as the prices are comparable.
I don't really notice any difference between the performance of my 12.9 (2017) with A10X and my XS Max with A12, so the other features would be more of a decider.
