This is a false dichotomy. The entire casing doesn't have to be thicker, only a part. And there are plenty of ways to make it fairly elegant and retain the thinness around the entirety of the screen. I have a feeling that Apple may have had another motive for the chin design that may be understood later.
IMO far more problematic with this design is the missed opportunity to redesign the stand, support pole (I miss the time when the idea that the screen should "float in mid air" was a thing), and solve the poor placement of the I/Os.
