Great thread to read as I am considering a Studio. I feel like it will give me years of use and this thread sure makes me more convinced.

Does anyone think it helps "future proof" it by paying for 64GB of RAM? I will use it for light duties - productivity, web, e-mail so it is overkill already.

I didn't think I would need the 64GB of RAM, but my apps are certainly using it. Especially Abobe Creative Suite and some of my photography apps utilize for than 26 or 32GB.

As a developer, xcode gets a hell of a boost with a ramdisk when compiling projects.

No, I don't have any need to upgrade. I don't upgrade just because something faster comes out. I upgrade when I need to upgrade.
No way... My maxed out Max is great, I don't see the need to upgrade anytime soon! Sure I could have held out for M2 but then the discussion would be about M3 so can't wait forever but io tend to keep my computers for a long time (5+ years). I'm probably good til' M10 lol

My previous late 2015 27” 5K iMac was doing great for 5 yrs.

A year or so ago i did an internal SSD upgrade (switching from Fusion Drive) giving it a little bit more life.

When i upgraded to a new camera the iMac started to struggle a little bit with the bigger raw files (still manageable but slower)

I’m planing the same for my Mac Studio , 3-4 yrs at least.

The performance will be there for my needs.

For me , one reason to upgrade sooner will be if we get a totally silent one (fans completely off until needed).

No, I would not be looking to upgrade for a number of years.
The 27" iMac I had gave me good service for quite a while, I expect the Mac Studio to do the same.

I'm with you. Feels like my Apple desktops last way longer than my laptops. Why I am close to pulling the trigger on a Studio - I would expect 5 plus years of good service from it.

You should order it now then—the way things are nowadays, it might take 5 plus years to receive it. 😝

Yeah. I've been trying to snag a refurb base model and I keep missing them. Now I have an e-mail alert set! Hopefully next time they stock the store, I'll get one.

I'll change my vote, if an Apple M2 MacStudio:

  1. Apple fixed the abysmally slow 4K SSD read/writes seen from the M1. While they can write/read large files very fast, the platform is held back by writes and reads of small 4k files.
  2. Apple allowed for user swapping of SSD's - or SSD's added after purchase
I might consider selling off my existing Ultra to buy a new one.

they will never do that, charging massive upscale price on BTO is their cream and butter for the macs.

Refurbs aren't really the problem. If they have them, they're immediately available until they sell out – and they are "as-is" as far as configuration. But if you order a new one and customize the config, I hear you can expect a 6-10 week delay depending on the config you order.

That's a looooonnng time to wait with great anticipation. I ordered my Mac Studio about 2 hours after it was announced and still had to wait several weeks.

Totally understood. I want a base Studio so I could just pay $2K at the store today. But I want to save a couple hundred if I can or get 64GB RAM maybe. I don't need the device urgently.

If you're looking for the base model, that's a smart move looking for a refurb.

I don't know what sort of discount you would get on the refurb, but you might consider buying a new one online through the Education store, or the business program. They offer pretty much the same discount – about $200 U.S. Not being in a hurry to get the new machine offers you some nice options.

Given the power of the Studio, you're going to get a lot of years of use out of it. Over 5-6 years, saving a few hundred dollars isn't really worth jumping for joy over, but the 64GB of RAM will pay off every time you use the machine, I would spend the savings on the RAM upgrade if you can.

No matter what, good luck. You're going to love the Studio.

Thanks. I won a brand new on eBay yesterday. Impatiently waiting for it to arrive. Saved a couple hundred and it's unopened - which is kind of nice. Base spec which I'm confident is all I need. I'll post what I think of it as a non-power user, non-content creator, etc. I'm fairly certain I'll get four or five years out of it and then can pass it down to kids if I want.

Just ordered a base Studio and Display, which means M2 versions will be released tomorrow as that’s usually what happens whenever I drop serious cash on an Apple purchase 😁

I get that! Mine is in the mail so I'm in the same boat as you. Here's the good news - I have an M1 Pro MBP and there is absolutely nothing I would change about it (except display support and RAM - things the Studio solves). I'm confident the M1 Max Studio is a many year investment.

Exactly. The Mac and definitely the Studio Display will be my last computer purchase for many years.
