1) by all means pop in the opengl line i did for a while and then realised my game was crashing occasionally so had to remove it...i reccommed:

2) turn off the sun streaks, water effects and lower particle density etc use your common sense....put it all on low and raise things up bit by bit to see what you can manage, we all have different macs with different graphics cards their gonna vary on their abilities...AA(antialiasing) works on 4x for me, ill post my specs at the end..

3) addons muck up the game, make sure they are fully updated and turn em off at first when you set up your graphics. the patch aint been out long enough for the developers to perfect em yet...also gs affects your currently bugged /inspect dont worry everyone has this problem mac or windows.

4) i suggest going to video-advanced-and putting on reduce input lag, helps i think even though it says otherwise to performance definately helps gameplay so a valuable setting.

last and most certainly not least: DON'T do it in Lagaran (Dalaran), goto Ironforge (best fps for me, enclosed, simple and less bodies, so less lag and also less morons firing off abilitys....except near the dummies make sure your away from that when you set it up for now) do not expect to get good Fps in lagaran we are not the only ones there are plenty of pc users with crap fps there its just the way it is, set up your hearthstone and time yourself. post patch wow is now a thinking game not a mindless button mash in more ways than one.

This all worked for me and now i have a more than playable game....give them a little while to work it out...the server is down now for me in the UK atm. i have a: 20" iMac C2D 2.4ghz....4gb....hd2600 pro. nothing new or that special..try out what ive said i think youll be surprised! here are my settings but remember yours might need some tweaking. NN!

i've had stuttering since 3.X, however with 4 its insane. Ive lowered my settings, and whether i'm on low, good or in between i get a steady XX (say 40 on good settings) and then randomly stutters to 5, back up.. i can be walking straight with no one else near me and nothing out of the ordinary and it does it.

It even does it on the older opengl engine for me (though my fps shoot up a bit). It's gotten to the point where I want to quit, and I just reactivated my account!! It used to be so playable, and I don't mean in lageran but overall. This is beyond frustrating for me, nothing I set it to seems to help, i get hte random stuttering every minute or 2 out of no where

any ideas?

I wonder if some of the performance issues can be attributed to some mods adding extra data traffic on the servers. Some were patched to reduce this problem but not eliminate it. Blizzard also stated that they were going to be adding extra data sets that could be accessed. If this patch opened up some of that extra data and some mods dealt with it in a clumsy way it could cause lag for many users, especially in crowded areas.

Doesn't matter to me anymore as I quit during the fiasco over data privacy months ago.

The biggest culprit is ADD-ONS.

Outdated addons like Fubar literally cuts fps in 1/2.

Has anyone else noticed choppiness when turning? Even out in the old world with no other players in sight, I turn too fast and it's slideshow time.

Was on the way to the Apple store to buy a new Imac 27" I5 and i saw this...kinda backing out now

Go into your WTF folder and open config.wtf in TextEdit.
Put in SET gxApi "opengl" and you'll be running the old engine - making it playable again in good graphics.

Completely ignorant question, but what other alternative than OpenGL is there on a Mac? Unless they added a DirectX emulation layer, and that is why it is so slow? Please tell me it isn't so!

The default in the current patch is called GLL and I believe that it makes use of some newer OpenGL features. The old "OpenGL" mode doesn't use those advanced features.

That's my understanding and it might not be 100% accurate. But I'm confident that both modes use OpenGL.

A quick google reveals that to be accurate and I've also found a blizzart poster saying that 10.6.5 fixes a driver bug that apparently causes the poor performance of the new effects.

It's sad that you need the latest OS version to be able to play an expansion, and that Mac versions of games always run terribly when compared to their PC-counterparts.
I suppose you don't need Win7 to play cataclysm and that it'll happily run on Vista (and maybe even XP SP3)...

Glad I didn't erase that Bootcamp partition after all...

It's sad that people base everything on patches that were just released. Look back at other major patches and you will see the same complaints / comments. Blizzard has and will fix any performance bugs associated with the patches. Also, read through the WoW forums and you will see that many PCs (Windows 7 included) also have performance issues with the latest patch.

Something completely random but I noticed helped considerably with the "stuttering" that many of you are mentioning...

In the recent patch, I noticed that a setting was enabled in Interface for Hardware Cursor. Once I disabled that, the stuttering immediately dissapeared. Not sure if this will help any of you, but could be worth a shot.

Ok, I can see that. But still, there's no denying that performance in OS X is subpar in comparison with windows.

All games have always performed worse under OSX then Windows but WoW is one game where the difference historically wasn't that much (i.e. WoW has been very playable under OSX). Like I said earlier, Windows users are also having performance issues after the patch. Please wait until Blizzard gets the bugs out of the OSX WoW and Windows WoW and until Apple releases the latest OSX update.

I use an i5 2.66 ATI 4850 machine with 8g.

I am over 100fps in Dalaran, hitting over 200 outside, at 2560x1440

1) You must have SL
2) You must have the "video driver patch" from not to long ago
3) In WOW - set Water effects to the lowest setting
4) In WOW - set Sunshafts to the lowest setting
5) You most likely need an ATI card, my friends' 8800 iMac is randomly good/bad
6) You must have 4GB or more memory

I remember having to use the OpenGL fix back when they launched the Call of the Crusade patch, and it made substantial improvements. But back then, I think I was operating on 10.5 and have since updated to 10.6. Does anyone know if I should have to re-edit the text file? I'm not in front of my home computer at the moment, so I was curious. If it does reset, I guess it would be wise for everyone to double-check that it's still at the "proper" setting?

As a side note, I'm having bigger issues with the mobile armory app since the launch of 4.0.1. It's almost unusable at the moment... Thread started in the iphone app forum here:

With fubar "fubar", what mod are people using to replace it?

This worked for me. I went from 6fps back to 36fps, no lock ups, weird, jumping, etc.

The new drivers might work when 10.6.5 comes out - but until then this fix is probably our best option.

The game looks/performs exactly like before.

wow, didn't even know fubar was still around, I remember that one from BC and earth Wrath. What functions in fubar do you need?

Okay, the only thing I can tell you which fixes the FPS issue 95% of the time is to switch to windowed mode (command + M) for a couple seconds and then back again. The lag will happen again, but it will work for a while.

Changing to the older 3.x OpenGL mode won't do it, changing video settings has a very minor impact on the speed if you aren't going past what you know your computer can do. What I mean by that if you have a fast system which plays on x, messing around with it won't change the < 10 FPS issue as it is a bug not a case of your computer not being able to handle the settings.

That being said the shadow setting set to lowest seems to have the largest raw FPS increase for me if you find the game a lot lower with the new water/sunshafts. I like my pretty water and lava dammit.

Now if someone on the forum could get the Headless Horseman's mount to stop showing up on my damn alts and get me one on my main I would be in your debt.

Simply because WoW doesn't run right at this present moment in time?

Posted this on Sat went out on Sunday and bought the Imac....Love it...WOW Plays so sweet on it........Once you go mac you will never LOOK BACK!!!

When I try to fly from Dalaran to any other location WoW crashes.
Even with my own flying mount it crashes.
This patch is a disaster for Mac Users!
I think it's the most serious of all since I can't play my character!
I have all my Video Settings to Fair.
I'm really disappointed!

For Mac users, FAIR, tends to be a disaster. So avoiding that setting anywhere in the video panel will probably reduce some of the freezes and crashes.

At least until the fix the bugs in fair settings for Mac users.
