If it's nothing more than the iOS4 for iphone, I don't see what it will really add? Folders? Multitasking? It's not true multitasking so who care?

Wow. This sucks, would have thought september at best

iAd is different the iOS4.

Warning, speculation follows...

I suspect Apple will early launch iOS4 on the iPad which will essentially be an early "hack" to get feature parity. This still means the codebases of iPhone and iPad will be separate, but will be much more feature equal.

My guess is that iAd is being released in November-ish because this is when Apple expects the unified codebase for the two platforms to be complete.

I'm putting my money on Sept since that's typically a month that Apple does it's most fall announcements (looking at update history). Nov was just for iAd. Yes it's built in but that doesn't mean iOS4 goes with the same timeline. They might just disable iAd or something or just choose not to allow the ads.

Gamecenter is built into iOS4 and it's still not available yet.

Just something to think about before everyone goes off on a tangent.

where I get lost is WHY it's taking so long. It's basically the same hardware to run the OS. They better have something wicked planned. Right now the lack of innovative and cool apps on the iPad is too great. I feel that all the dev's are waiting for iOS 4 to come to the iPad so they have to redo all their apps in 3 months.

November was unexpected. More proof Apple is incapable of focusing on more than one major product at one time. New iPad apps seemed to have stalled out, and most of the ones that are out now are just iPhone apps with better graphics.

I’m actually surprised they haven’t shipped 3.2.1. It has to be close since the Safari they showed at WWDC on the iPad didn’t have to reload every page like it does currently (see Safari and Web State of the Union video).

Yeah, I enjoy my iPad, but I'm really disappointed with the app selection so far. I know it's only been three months, but it seems like very little has been released since April aside from ports of iPhone apps.

On the other hand, I don't exactly know what I'm expecting that isn't already out. I love the painting apps, and the news readers are all quite good. Some strong game titles as well like Broken Sword and soon to be released Samurai. But, sometimes I wish instead of buying my iMac in January and the iPad in April, I had just put down $2000 on a maxed out 13 or 15 inch MacBook pro or MacBook air. Since I knew a tablet was coming, the iMac/tablet combo was planned from the start. I suppose the grass is always greener and all, so I try to be happy with what I have.

Like I said above, feature (i.e. API) parity will come sooner.

The issue is unifying the API's between the platforms and rectifying the significant UI differences between the two platforms.

I would expect to see dev previews of these coming soon to the iPad with a soon release.

My guess full unison will come with iOS 4.3.

Would not shock me, given that the iPad 3G was to ship by 'the end of April' arrived the last day of April.Apple loves cutting it close. If anything, I think 'November' is a little early and fully expect it the day before the Winter Solstice in December.

I care. Now I can use other applications while ooTunes play in the background. I can organize apps in folders, reducing over 15's screens worth of apps into four. I can leave YouTube and DailyMotion, and come back to where I left the video right away. Many apps load faster because of state saving.

I care, and I don't care that you don't.

Seconded.

I care too. It does matter to a LOT of people.

Full integration wil definitely be end of year. It is a big task.

However, I still hold that we will see features like multitasking and others come to the iPad soon.

Apple are not idiots, but I agree they do like to cut it close.

November would be disappointing for an iOS 4 release however I wouldn't call this confirmed information yet; there's too many if's and but's in the story. The best indication will be when they start releasing beta versions to developers. If we don't see any in the next couple of months then early autumn release would be unlikely.

While I generally love Apple products, they follow the often repeated pattern where the bigger the company becomes, the less nimble they become and the more issues they encounter with their products. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with Jobs reputation for being a perfectionist.

Just curious, everyone has always said September, September but didn't Apple say fall and never September? Fall doesn't even start to near the end (23ed) of September.

What are you talking about? The ipad, iPhone 4 and iOS 4 were all under development at the same time. I'm sure there were a lot of other things being worked on as well. Where do people pull this stuff out of?

with the jailbreak and amazing cydia apps i could care less about OS 4 at this point. i already have true multi-tasking so i can listen to pandora and look at pictures etc.... and with categories i have better than folders so im all set.

with all the hours i have into getting my ipad to look like i want and do all the tasks i need i will be hesitant to upgrade unless there is more to it then i have read so far.
